Unhappy no speedometer or odometer!?

My speedometer and odometer stopped working last night. I also have the overdrive light "off" flashing.
Anyone have this problem? Solution?
Thanks for any help!

Well that's real helpful

I removed the rear sensor and cleaned off some metal shavings from the magnet pickup. Worked for about 45 miles then stopped. It started to work again today.
Think it's time for a new sensor.

Update
I took out the sensor again just to make sure there wasn't any metal on it. Looked fine. The only "problem" is the speedo isn't smooth from 0 to 5mph. After 5mph it works just like normal.
Go figure.

The sensor is near the output housing of the transmission by the rear driveshaft.
My sensor sometimes cuts out when the truck is on a long ride (especially towing). I still have to go purchase one.
Does anyone know where to purchase the sensor online?

Don't overlook the speed sensor in the rear axle housing.. Right up top.. One 10 mm bolt holds it in and real inexpensive, about $15.00. I have seen these sensors lead to inoperative speedo's and strange shift patters along with the ABS lamp illuminated.

Just my thoughts.

Good Luck!!

flashing od light is typically a sign of a tranny problem as i understand it.

FordMasterTech,

Thanks for your help!!!

I ordered an OSS sensor because I had removed it an saw some fine metal on it and crack across the epoxy. This is the forward OSS on the tail shaft. Put the new one in and still the speedo quicks after a mile

I also noticed there is another OSS behind the 4x4 shift motor, so I put the sensor there since I was getting a 720 code. Same crap. The 720 clearly points to the OSS
So I'm now after waiting for the sensor and it still not working.

I recalled your post, and took out the sensor from the rear axle. It was coated with some fine metal. Cleaned it off and the speedo now works! Well at least for the last 25 miles.

Worked for a week along with a 120 mile towing of my track car. Failed on the way home from the track

Going to order a rear ABS sensor.
This is very annoying!!

Angry

New rear axle sensor didn't fix the problem.
I drove the truck today for 25 miles. Speedo worked at about mile 10 for about a mile, then quit again.
I'm wondering if there is a harness or connector problem. Could the main control unit just be bad?

This is getting old very fast.

Could be a wiring problem. Could be the speedo itself. Could be the PCM. etc....

You might want to get a diagnostic done on this,,, it may save your some money. And you don't have to let them fix it.. if you want to try it yourself!!!!!

Good Luck

Same thing is happening to me, but with a twist

I have been having the same problems with my 1995 f150 4x4. The odometer stops working, the speedometer stops working, and the O/D light flashes.

but here is my twist. I noticed a while back (when the speedo and odo worked) that if I turned on my interior lights the odo, speedo stopped working and the O/D light blinked. Even opening the glove compartment would kill it!

I then realized that when I open my door with no key in the ignition that the interior lights did not come on!

My one uncle thinks it has something to do with the module that would dim the interior lights after a few seconds.

To me it definately appears to be wiring issue.

Any ideas??
