Thunking sound
Thunking sound
I did a search but didn't turn up much. I have a Thunk sound coming from what sounds like the front end when I stop and first take off. Any idea's? 2003 Screw with 5.4 fx-4 and about 5,000 miles. Thanks in advance.

Interesting to see that they ***STILL*** haven't solved the mysterious 'thunk' on the 03's...
Troy... do you have any other thoughts about the thunk since you have a 4wd and I have a 2wd and they both 'thunk'?

wytlightning, is that a 3.73 rear end on your truck? The thunk occurs when you accelerate around 15-20 MPH right. I think almost everyone has the 2nd to 1st downshift thunk and we mostly belive it's the transmission that is thunking. No one in the last 3 years has come up with a definate answer to this one... unfortunatly....
The sound you're hearing just about has to be the calipers. Mine in my '01 got to where they were making a helluva lot of noise, clunking taking off (as you described), groaning when braking into a right turn, etc. I finally gooped up the calipers and pads with disc brake goop when I was doing a tire rotation. A couple of bucks well spent - no more mystery noises from the front end.
