Loud thump when tranny shifts sometimes
When I let off the accerator for a moment then press it accel, the truck seems to hesitate, then I hear a thump and tranny shifts ok.
Is this a TPS problem or do I have something else brewing?

Robby,
At what speed does this occur? Mine does something similar but between 20-25 and if I hit the gas, it'll drop down from 3rd to 2nd and then I get a loud clunk. If I wait until like 18-20, the tranny automatically drops down to 2nd and then when I accelerate it doesn't clunk because it's already in 2nd. Is this what yours is doing?

My 93 is doing the same thing. This is my first truck, so I didn't know if it was "normal" or not. I took it to a local tranny guy I know and he opened up the rear end (the differential?) and said that there was some "play" in the spider-gear back there. The thumping is (apparently) the result of this play and (apparently)could get worse. The estimate to fix it (with a new spider gear and bearings) would be about $400 he said. Oddly enough, after he put the thing back together and put in new fluid, the problem seemed to diminish. (It may be that it just seems less now because I know what's causing it.)
