Unhappy I'm in what gear?

I have a 1998 F-150 4x4. It has the 4.6 in it. I've noticed my gear indicator doesn't line up with the proper gear. I'm not automotivly inclined so I'm not sure what the proper name is. When the truck is in N it looks as if it was in Drive. I had one weird thing happen not too long ago. I thought I was in Drive. I took off like a bat out of hell and it took of better than normal. One thing though.. it sounded like it was going to blow up. It was almost like it was in between gears. It scared me. I was like.. crap what did I do to my truck. I stopped and put it in N. I then put it back into drive and drove off. I has only done it that one time. Is this an adjustment at the gear indicator or in the transmission? My warranty is good until 2006 so I'm ok there. I just hate the hassle of the dealerships. Please advise me on what you think I should do. Let me know the proper terminology for what I was trying to describe. Thanks!!

I dont know if the 98's have it but on my 92 and 94 there is a wheel adjustment for the indicator just below and to the right of the steering column-you should be able to move the indicator to where it should be-its a little white wheel with a white tube connected to it

Cool

What do you think happened when it sounded as if the engine was going to blow up. The engine just reved really high as I picked up speed. Thanks for the info.

Mine seems to be a little misalligned also. I am gonna have the dealer fix it when I take it in to have the column/shifter rubber boot replaced though.

Thumbs up

I was doing a search on this matter since I am having the same problem. I will check at the steering column to get to the adjuster.

On mine you adjust it at the transmission.
