Post Transmission Bang

Mt transmission makes two distinct clunks or bangs when shifting into 3rd gear at WOT. It seems to shift normally at normal speed. I have a 98 4x4 lariat SC with 5.4 engine. I changed the fluid at 22,000, now have 27,900.There wasn't any improvement after I changed the fluid (mercon V). Any ideas before I bring it in to the dealer?

Hi par,

Make sure to tell your dealer to check the shift solenoids, as sometimes they don't, and they can be a source of noise & trouble in these Ford autoamtics sometimes. If the solenoid is "hurt", you can get a thump type of sound coming up thru the floorboard there at the transmission tunnel "hump" inside the cab, when the transmission shifts.

This may or may not be your problem, but it's something to be sure to check.

Good luck!

My '94 F150 used to do this. The problem was the motor mounts.
