Question Torque converter drain plug question.

The shop manual says that the torque converter drain bolt must be replaced with a new one if it is removed. Has anyone had any trouble using the original bolt after draining? Maybe some thread-lock would be appropriate?

120,000 plus miles with 4 trans fluid changes including 4 torque converter fluid changes and the same drain plug with no problems.

I reused mine with no problem and it has been a year since I changed the fluid.

It should be good to go just like the oil pan drain plug it can be used over and over again I see no problem using it over again.

I would add though that it seems to have rather fine threads and might be easy to strip.

True, but you could easily strip a new one with fine threads also. I put mine in and touqued to spec with no problem.

What is the spec'd torque? I just cranked till it felt like a little more would be too much.

The shop manual says 10 Nm or 89 Lb-In.
That's only a 1/8-27 thread plug.

My shop manual says 21 - 22 foot pounds and that's what I torqued to.

That must be the spec for your transmission. Mine is a 2001, V-6, 4R70W and the shop manual states: "10 Nm or 89 Lb-In".

Yes, there is definitely a difference. Maybe form 2000 Model to 2001. I have noticed that the 4R100 specs for the 2001 are 18-23 ft/lb.

Go figure.
