Angry Auto tranny hangs in 2nd when cold

Get this, I took my 98 F150 to the dealer to have this shifting problem looked into. It hangs in 2nd when the truck is cold. They checked it out and found a TSB that says, "THIS IS NORMAL" tranny stays in lower gear to aid in faster warm up. This is only a problem when the tranny sends a code to the computer. Then and only then will they replace a modulator.

Thankfully my buddy is the service writer and he's going to install the modulator for me just to see if it helps.

But give me a break. Have any of you seen this sort of trouble????

I also have a 98 4.6 that had the same problem. The dealer replaced the 2-3 accumulator piston in the transmission at ~15K miles; that took care of the problem.

svt2205,
Having the same problem with my '97, it also will not engage into overdrive, once the late shift is made. I took mine to the dealer, and they could not find a code... I'm sure that a test drive wouldn't have helped, huh? Oh well, guess I have to wait for a major problem...

Exclamation

That 2-3 upshift delay is definitely not normal. I am experiencing it as well. I'm taking my truck in for the fix next month.

There is a TSB for this issue. It is number 99-9-6. As long as your vehicle is under warranty, they will perform this.

The TSB states the following:
This concern is ONLY for vehicles with Ford Quality Remanufactured (FQR) 4R70W Transmission Exchange Units with Julian build dates between 062-97 and 040-99 (corresponding serial numbers are between R0475797 and R0771887).

ISSUE:
A delayed or no 2-3 upshift, primarily when the transmission is cold, may be evident on some vehicles. In some cases, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0782 may also be present. This may be caused by fluid pressure leakage past the larger diameter seal of the 2-3 accumulator.

ACTION:
Replace the 2-3 accumulator piston using a revised piston. The revised piston will increase seal/bore interference, eliminating any internal leak relating to the 2-3 upshift concerns.
Piston Part number: F7AZ-7H292-AB
