Popping/Knocking sound near front end

I just came across this post, I have an Expedition and have not had this problem. It looks to me like there is a bad nut / washer arrangement on the control arm and it allows some play. This is only my interpretation, as the post was very vague. Maybe the person "James" can elaborate. I imagine you could try a new bolt or star washer, or bushings. If you follow the link, scroll down the left side to the How To's section and see the post about the sliding control arm that causes "the clunk".

Sorry if this is confusing.

Hi Truck
Second time ive seen a post on this. My 99SC makes the exact same noise. As i recall I was also backing in or out, just barely moving. I dont recall how sharp i turned wheels.
As i recall its happened a couple times...it does grab your attention....but my truck seems to track straight..no wobble/shake/vibs....i do rotate tire etc. So...i tend to forget about it...last time...hmmmmmm? earlier this year?
OO...tks for link. I didnt see info. with pics...Was a fix done? If so...Why? Is this something to be concerned with?
Hey James...where are you?

There probably isn't a lot of people notice the problem especially if they are listening to the stereo. I did have one of my friends that works at Big O Tires but he was unable to detect anything wrong. When I get some time I am going to look at James photos and make sure my bolt is tight. I am also going to put WD40 on my bushings.

I have the same model and year of truck as you and had a similar problem. The dealer replacer the idler arm. They told me that it was a common issue on this model. I have to grease the idler arm monthly if it rains a lot.
I got the noise again and it was a loose lower shock bolt (My fault when I put my Rancho 9000's on)
I put on a Rancho steering stabilizer on to help take the pressure off the idler arm.
so far so good.

my 97 did it... Was in for service for a week tracking it down. When they finally connected the ears to the chassis, they found it... turned out to be the trans cross-member right under the driver's seat shifting around... they dropped it (the cross-member) slapped some grease on it, and bolted it back together, and it never made the noise again.
