Post 4.6 triton problems

I've got a 4.6L in a '98 f150 lariat, 4x4 extended cab...at 66,000 miles, it went to the big engine pile in the sky...Does anyone know of an affordable source for the Triton engine...Truck is only 1 1/2 years old, but well past on the miles, and dealer said too bad...Hard to stomach $4000 for a used engine out of a wrecked truck to replace anything this new....any help would be appreciated, my dealer is doing nothing.

BTW, you might be able to get it rebuilt if that is an option.

According to the dealer, and some other ASE mechanics i have talked to, they all say the triton bottom end cannot be built, because it is a 'modular design'....This is the first i've heard of this, but what do i know, but i have gotten the same response from different sources....Mechanic says that the engine lost oil pressure, but no warning at all, i.e.: oil pressure light, loss on gauge.....I am really frustrated with this.

What do they mean the engine can't be rebuilt any engine can be rebuilt as long as the block ain't damaged.

I bought my truck with high miles. So before i bought it, I looked into cost of replacement engines. Two years ago, I was able to find used 4.6's for around $1000 dollars and rebuilt engines for $1200 (though at that time there were no cores, they would have to rebuild mine, and I'd have to wait). These prices do not include labor.

If it were my truck, I would talk to a 4.6 (car) tuner shop and find out if the computer could adjust for the 99 and up engine with better flowing heads (roughly 30 horsepower more). I would buy a junkyard 99 and up engine and install it my self. Going this route you'll get more power and be driving down the road for around $1500.

Thumbs down

Sounds like you need a new mechanic.

Modular means that Ford designed the 4.6 to spawn a number of different engines by adding or removing cylinders ie v6, v8, v10 (and maybe v12 someday ).

If it can't be rebuilt, why does the shop manual have all the rebuild specs in it? And why is the aftermarket making performace rods, pistons, etc?

It could be that your block was damaged beyond repair, but that would be a different issue.

Can't you replace the block if it is damaged beyond repair?

My dealer told me that the triton couldn't be built, as well as 3 different mechanics, without knowing whether or not the block was damaged...I don't know, it sounds odd, but i've had 4 guys tell me that, including a ford tech...I have a friend who works in the body shop at the ford dealership, and when i told him, he said they had replaced a lot of 5.4's, but that was it...Anyway, cheapest junkyard motor i've found has between 40k and 60k miles, and its gonna cost $2400 w/o any labor...I run k&n filtercharger, and mobil1 oil and filters, with regular changes, so this has kind of scared me...Its not like its been abused, i'm just not sure which way to go with this..

$4000.00 seems a little high for a rebuilt motor. karkraft.com has ford motors that are new, as well as 32v Navigator. You have to have your own computer tho'.

They are cheaper than $4k.

4k was the price for a USED, not rebuilt engine, including labor, tax, and parts...
Engine itself is about 3K...Junkyard buy is not any better, and no warranty...

When you say i would need my own computer, wouldn't the one in the truck now work?? I looked at Karkraft, and they have some crate engines as reasonable prices it seems, but help me out on the computer part if you could...Also, do any of you know, is the 5.4 past its problems, would you guys move up to that engine?

I was reading Mustle Mustangs and Fast Fords (March 2001) and they had an article about stroker 4.6's and rebuilding a 4.6 to a 318 ci.

There was a 300 ci shortblock with lots of goodies (manley rods, etc) for $2995. I followed the link and found an advertisement for a rod and piston kit for $1395. Check out http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com or http://www.re-racing.com.

I suspect that the issue with these mechanics is that they don't know how to rebuilt a mod motor (it looks more complicated than a 5.0/5.8) so they say it can't be done.

There are a few posts about 1999 5.4's having poor head machining on one bank, but mine has been perfect so far. I think the knock problem has been beat.

There are a couple of posts regarding Jasper Engines as well http://www.jasperengines.com but their website was down so I don't know if they have a 4.6.
