Hello, I have a 2013 F150 supercab XLT with the 5.0 I am VERY conservative driving. empty I get about 22 mpg on the highway at 65ish. I tow a KENDON Single/double motorcycle trailer, weight is only 350 pounds but another AXLE on the ground. I can get 21-22 MPG towing it, and 18-19MPG with 500-1000 pounds of cycles loaded on it.

I have a 21' V NOSE enclosed aluminum trailer, empty weight of 2000 pounds, loaded with hogs, gear about 5k.

What can I expect for MPG with this truck with the 21' enclosed trailer? Best method for towing (tow haul mode?)? I am looking for MAXIMUM MPG when towing. I don't mind drafting a bit to help off and on

Bob its just not that easy to say what you will get. Each vehicle, while equiped the same will produce different results. There are tons of factors involved, air temp, clean air filter, tire pressure, stop signs, trailer wind drag....etc. I had an 07 fx4 set up for towing. I got better mileage with a heavy duty tandem axle with 4-5000 lbs on it than I did with my 18' pontoon. Wind drag murdered me. In short to answer your question I could only assume you would be in the neighborhood of 12-14 mpg's.

 

Towing 5K pound's I would stay in the tow haul mode and run 3 to 5 mph under the posted limit's. The V nose on the trailer should help reduce wind drag but drafting with a loaded trailer at highway speed's to me is a no-no. I agree with Michael about an average of 12 to 14 mpg depending on the terrain of the highway's. Make sure you have the proper air pressure in the truck and trailer tires before hitting the highway also. I usually put 2 to 4 psi(cold).. lower then the max psi reading on the tire sidewall.

 

12-14 mpg... I wish. I barely get that with 50/50 driving empty

 

5k... it will depend on your rear end ratio. I'd say somewhere between 12 and 14.

I get between 10.5 and 11.0 mpg towing my camper in my signature. No less, no more.

My camper is very tall and wide and is a great wind sail. Weight means little with larger trailers, it's the surface area that the wind will see.

 

mike is close, but weight comes in to play on hills as well but most of it is wind drag!

I tow 7700 LBS trailer full of fuel every week in a 5.0 with 3:55 threw the Santa Curse mountains, here lately I have been getting 10 to 11 MPG in the hills! I drive 55 MPH (California law) and ill see as high as 17 MPG out in the flats heading in to Fresno! but it is a shorter trailer that's only a foot above the bed. hope this was helpful!

 

I get 16-17.5 in my 5.0 4wd 3:73 mixed use. I can't beat 10mpg hauling out 25ft 5,500lb ultra lite Keystone RV. It comes down to the wind load of the frontal area of the RV. Hauling a billboard through the air is tough. My worst was 7mpg into a 20mph headwind maintaining 72 mph.

 

I can tell ya a little bit about mine. But I have the 6.2 with the max tow and 3;73's. I tow a 7x14 enclosed V-nose. I had the trailer custom built to haul my Ranger HD around. I added one foot of height, so it sticks up there a ways. My trips out to West Virginia are about 265 miles. The first half or so is pretty flat with some minor hills. Then I get into mountains for the last half of the trip. I usually travel between 60-65 mph. I average about 12-12.5 mpg. The worst which was in rain and against the wind was about 9.5 mpg. That was a bad day for traveling. If I can stay around 60 mph, don't tramp on her so much, in nice weather, with the wind, I can get better.......well, a little
