Im thinking of buying some used OEM wheels for 2012 F150. They are the Ford stock silver 20" 6 spoke wheels they put on the Lariat F150's. The previous owner has said the TPMS sensors were removed and he put on his new wheels. I've looked and have seen different types of sensors for F150's. Some are attached to the valve stem and some are square flat box and look like they lay flat against the wheel. How do you know which one you need? and I'm curious if its worth buying these wheels for the hassle of doing all that. He wants $1200 bucks for the rims and Pirelli scorpion tires with 6K miles on them. Seems like a good deal tell he told me tpms sensors were removed.

 

The valve stem sensors were used from 2009 up. The strap on sensors were only used 2007 and 2008. You can get sensors off ebay or from online dealers like Tasca.

another thing the truck currently has the 18" chrome wheels with tpms monitors. If i have the new tpms installed in the 20" rims can I just bolt on and go or do I have to do anything else? Ive seen some stuff guys talking about having to recalibrate your tpms or something or can I just install and drive with no problems.

 

If you just attach the old sensors to the new rims, you probably will have to do nothing. At the most, you would have to do a reset as listed in the owners manual.

 

I will most likely leave the sensors in the 18" and sell them right off the truck to a friend of mine and buy new ones for the 20" that currently dont have any.

 

and how do people re use the existing ones on another set of new rims? do they just unscrew or something with a special valve stem

 

You would have to let the air out, break the bead and unscrew the sensors from the valve stem. Just held on by a small screw.

As far as leaving them on for your friend, what year is his truck. If 07 or 08, the sensors will not work for him, and if 04-06, he does not need them. TPMS was not started on the F150 until 07. Also if you leave them on the old truck, sensors will run you around $150 for a set of 4.

i guess what im curious of as far as "reusing" is the valve stem that goes in the hole in the wheel and then the sensor part. Does the sensor screw into the valve stem or what and you have to replace both parts if put sensors on other wheels because i wud think it would not be compatible with regular valve stem

 

No the sensor attaches to the valve stem. There is a metal piece that sticks out the bottom of the valve stem. The sensor screws onto that with a screw. The valve stem itself is pretty much like any other valve stem except for the ability of the sensor being attached to it.
