Hey Folks,
I have a 2000 4.6 F150 that has a couple of burned valves and I am in the process of removing the heads. I have hit a stump... The fan clutch is attached to the water pump pulley with one large nut. When I turn the nut the pulley just spins. How can I hold this pulley to remove the clutch? Also, I have read in one book that this clutch has left handed threads and I have read in another book that it has right handed threads. Which is correct?

regular lefty loosy, righty tighty. Get yourself a baar or a big screwdriver and put it between the water pump pulley bolts and clutch fan and spin it off with a big crescent wrench

 

Rent the tool from a auto parts store. Works like a charm!!

And yes it's left to loosen it.

 

This is how I do it ... saves me a trip to town

I used a locking chain wrench wrapped around the pulley.

 

I've done it with a chisel. Smack the bolt on the counterclock wise side to break it loose.

This looks like a strap wrench on the pulley! And you wedged a long screwdriver between 2 water pump bolt diagnally for a backstop! Then smacked the cresent with a Hammer!

Is that what you did?

An Air Hammer / Chipper if you have the capability.

3-5 second wack and she will turn.

 

Only look at the screwdriver and crescent wrench.... and then.... yes, hold the screwdriver diagonal between to pulley bolts then push down on the crescent.

 

I rented the tool from O'Reilly's. Mine loosened in the normal (lefty) direction but you are right, both threads are out there. If you have a backwards threaded fan clutch it will say on the label on the fan shroud. If it doesn't say, it is normal direction.

You busted me

The strap wrench was a weak attempt to hold the pulley before I said screw it and jammed a screwdriver between the pulley bolts. No hammer was required.
