cannot pin point exactly where it is coming from but front driver side is general area, only happens in reverse gear, sounds like something is tightening and about to break. I noticed that it only happens in gear, i can roll backwards down a slope in neutral, and it doesnt happen, it is very loud, very embarrassing and i cant figure out what it is. i've tried every possible scenario with engaging the 4x4 as well.

Sounds like IWE. Plug IWE in search and you'll get a ton of stuff.

Also the tech articles has a fix or two.

 

I would check again while driving in gear forward. If you haven't had wheel bearing replacements that could be the cause. I thought I had the same issue when mine went out, but I just couldnt hear the grinding while driving in gear.


But if you are for sure it only happens in gear, then that is def not your problem..

 

03's don't have IWE's.

Definitely not wheel bearings. I replaced them already and the noise was there immediatelu after. This noise is extremely loud literally like a huge heavy piece of iron being dragged across another in a binding tightening sound. No matter how fast or slow im backing up. There's no prelude to it happening just happens.

Any other suggestions since the 03 doesnt have an iwe?

 

Just me, but , if the noise came right after putting on wheel bearings.... then I would go back through the bearing process to figure out what went wrong. Sounds to me like maybe the truck should not be driven until an answer is found.

 

Put it on stands, start it up, put in reverse and take a look. Easiest way to figure it out...

 

Red02fx4 thanks for your suggestion, however the bearings were not changed because of the noise. The bearings had a noise of their own.

03's don't have IWE's, I made the same mistake.

 

Granted, the noise may not be from the bearings themselves. But I said before, as per your post, if the noise came RIGHT AFTER the bearing install then I would look into the repair process. Without knowing the noise ourselves... it could be a tweaked dust shield, a caliper issue, rotor not seated all the way.

Again, not being there to see... and from the information given... re-inspect the repair, IF indeed it was created from installing hub bearings.

To clarify. The noise DID NOT start after the bearing change. The noise was always there. My bearings needed changing and had a noise of their own. My thought was because the bearinhs were bad they were affecting or causing noise elsewhere in the front end.

Bearings changed, bearing noise resolved. This other noise continued.

Cv shaft?

 

CV shaft may be something to look at. Any suggestions on how to check this?
