Truck is an '07 with 80,000 miles & with the 4.6 engine. I've owned the truck for a year & want to replace the plugs. Dealer wants $300 bucks to do it, plus tax. Does this engine have the issue with the plugs breaking off? I'm fairly good with a wrench, but should I just let the pros do it & couph up the $300? Any special tips, tricks to accomplish this without any major headaches? Thanx a bunch!

 

No, the 4.6 does not have the problem. Just be careful working with the alum heads and use Motorcraft plugs.

the 4.6 is easy its a little tougher if your a big guy like me tho.

 

$300 is excessive, your dealer is trying to take you to the cleaners. Use Motorcraft plugs, do not use antiseize, and torque them to 28 ft/lb. Use dielectric grease in the COP boots when reinstalling.

 

Thanx for the replies & the link to the write up. I see that the OEM plugs are like $.3.50 at Advance Auto. The quote from the dealer included replacing the boots which are like $6 bucks a piece. So he wants about $240 for labor. Nah, I'll do it myself. Should I soak the plugs in PB before I pull them & does it matter if the engine is cold or warm? Just want to avoid any headaces.

 

My dealership just quoted me $469 to do it on the 2v 4.6

Just ensure you blow out the plug wells with air to eject all the spooge

Make sure the plugs are genuine Motorcraft, not OEM "replacement" Autolites.......

Motorcraft SP493's are $2.49 each at rockauto.com, and Motorcraft WR6128 COP boots are $5.79.

The dealer is charging you full retail for the plugs and boots, which probably puts the parts bill up around the $150 range. With that, $300 isn't that bad.

i need to do my plugs again. i had a misfire so i just threw some autolites in and would much rather have motorcraft but i was broke at the time. so next oil change they will get changed prolly
