Blend Door

I think my blend door is stuck. I get only cold air. I have a climate control system. I read the tutorial on how to change it. What a job!!! Before I tackle the job I want to know for sure that the actuator motor is working. How can I check it without tearing apart the dash? My truck is a 2002 F150 Super Crew. (5.4)

Thanks,
WOW (Will Walker)

I don't have the details here and a few minutes of searching haven't come up with it, but the EATC has a self-test diagnostic routine that you can run.

You probably have a broken blend door. Check out a company called Heater Treater. I replaced my blend door with one of thier doors a few weeks ago. It works perfectly and you don't have to remove your dash.

Thanks, Jason,

I looked up their website and watched the video. Why do I have to buy their blend door? Why couldn't I use one from Ford and cut out the back of the Glove box and install it? Do you have to cut the housing that encloses the blend door and heater core, or can you get to the screws and remove it through the glove box opening?

Thanks,
Will

Looks like their door is steel instead of plastic.
You can't get to all the screws to remove the box top. Nor can you open it inside the dash. You can do the cut open behind the glove box method. But it may actually take just as long as doing it the right way since you have to cram yourself into that tiny glovebox hole and cut and reseal.

Yes, GLC, I did run the diagnostics and found that everything checked out OK, so it must be the blend door. I'm building up the courage to go ahead and pull the dash and do it right. I'm afraid of the cutting and all with heater treater. The weather here has been warm lately, but I'm sure we will be getting cold weather again soon, and I'll have no other option.

Thanks, all, for the help

Read and follow the instructions on Heater Treater's website that tells you how to verify if the blend door is actually broken. I incorrectly assumed my issue was the blend door and lacked the motivation to tear my dash apart. In the end, my actuator motor was the issue. Once I saw the video of how to verify that the blend door is broken, I removed the actuator motor assuming I would find pieces of the blend door. Nope, nothing. It was the actuator itself. Maybe a $25 part that Autozone had in stock. 10 minutes to remove and replace. I ran without A/C for five years....

Well I did the diagnosis using the climate control system and got no codes. I removed the blend door actuator motor. It had no plastic particles on it. I did the "Heater Treater" pin test using a 9 volt battery. It tested bad. I bought a new actuator motor ($60.00) and replaced it. Still no heat!! What next? It must be the Blend door, right?

Why can't I Do the heater treater cut out method and use an original Ford blend door? Any reason it won't work?

Well, I'm an idiot! Thank goodness I didn't start cutting, because last night while driving my truck, I noticed the temperature guage was higher than normal. It has never done that before. I felt the heater hoses and found one hot and one cold, which is not right on a climate controled system. I then let it cool and checked the water (anti-freeze) level. It was a gallon low. DAH! I have a leak somewhere that I am now trying to find. My heater works fine now. MORAL of the story: CHECK THE WATER LEVEL FIRST!!!

To answer your last question, a stock blend just won't fit. Trust me I tried. The heater treater door is in two pcs allowing you to install the door. Glad to hear you have your problem figured out.

I wish I had seen this post first. All other post as well as the heater treater site make this job appear simple. Unfortunately that is not the case on super crews as river ghost points out. Does anyone know the solution to river ghosts post ?
