Reverse went out, how much is a fix like this?

Well today while out running errands my reverse went out.

I was pulling out of a parking spot and as I shifted into reverse I heard a bang from the rear end.
As I gave it gas it was barely moving.
I made it home and when I tried reverse again it bumped into gear but when I gave it gas it just revved and barely moved anywhere.
I know it's going to be hard to get a quote like this over the phone from a transmission shop, so I'm hoping anyone here has read, heard, or has had this happen to them?
(Said truck is a 2004 F150 5.4)

Does it sound like I need a whole new tranny build or just something with the reverse?

Any ideas on pricing would be very helpful. With Chistmas just passing my wallet is very light!

Thanks guys

Just wanted to clarify that I don't hope this has happend to anyone as this is a major fix and I imagine costly.

Anyone know of a reputable and inexpensive transmission shop in Bakersfield?

I can highly recommend this trans shop.......
Stu’s AE Transmission Exchange
5531 Cherry Ave
Long Beach, Ca
562-428-4641

yeah I know it is a couple hour drive but they have been in business for 30+ years, prices are very good and typically 1 day service- they can either rebuild yours or do an exchange, you can carry your trans in the door or drag the truck in there and they will R&R.

I don't want to be a bearer of bad news, but it's costly.

Someone posted here 800 just for an overdrive band replacement. And band is easily accessible from the front side of transmission.

My reverse went out some 19 years ago on a C-6 transmission, and the complete rebuild was 700 +.

1st gear and reverse use the same clutch, so now we're talking about a complete rebuild.

i got mine completely rebuilt (stock rebuild) from a very reputable builder here in IL, for $1800. basically anything over $2K is too much for a stock rebuild.
