Is there any documentation out there for this?

 

I've removed the cab from my 99 SCAB to replace the heads, there is not much to it. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask. I also have a thread on here that shows my cab off the truck. I think the thread topic is 'this is how I fixed the spark plug blow out'

 

Any information you can throw at me is appreciated.
Built Lightning motor is hurt after 1500 miles, would remove the motor from the bay but my aftermarket oil pan is too large to allow it.

Will be removing the cab tomorrow.

 

Can't help you on the cab removal. Pan can't be removed after it's up out of the mounts? I would think out the engine bay would be easier. Had mine out in about 4 hours.

What's the diagnosis on the built lightning engine taking a dump so soon?

 

I've heard that guys who really know how to do it can have a cab off in 20 minutes. Gotta have the lift for that. if you got access to one I would definitely do it that way..

 

Have access to a lift and to remove the oil pan would require to drop the tranny as well.
Built L motor had some metallic debris sitting in the IC reservoir unknown to anyone and when I punched it, got sucked into a cylinder and now I am hoping for the best.
Maybe replace a piston and disassemble/clean the entire longblock.

There are 4 cab mounts that are easily accessed by removing the sill plates and pulling the carpet back. Those can be a bugger to get free depending if they are rusted out. As for under the hood, I removed the fan and radiator and hoses, remove the grill surround, remove the bolts for the trans and p/s coolers and those can hang out of your way, remove the 2 front bolts holding the cab to the frame ( I broke one during removal), detach the steering shaft from the steering gear, remove the throttle linkage and intake tube, and the wiring to the starter relay has to be taken off. Then position your lift under the cab, (this was easy for my SCAB, I'm not sure where to position the lift on your reg cab so use caution), then you can begin to lift the cab off very slowly. I made the mistake of unplugging harnesses that didn't need done. Basically the only wiring you need to remove is what is attached to the engine. Oh, remove the A/c compressor from the engine and let that remain with the frame part of the truck as well as the condenser, just remove that from the truck and let that sit on the bumper as the cab is lifted off. Never seen an intake manifold installed with the cop's still bolted on

 

I was tearing it apart in this picture, I added it because I'm so short I was able to stand on the frame with the cab above me

 

Please correct me if I'm wrong,
but isn't the intercooler system a closed system. Separate from the motor?
Just trying to figure out how anything could possibly get sucked into the motor from the intercooler reservoir?

 

My mistake, debris was sitting in upper intake.

Got'r done. Wasn't awful, better part of 6 hours to lift the cab, remove the motor, support the tranny, sit the cab back down.

Need to replace 2 pistons. Have to get the TFS heads checked out, cylinder #3 leakdown is very bad, may require a valve job or taking the 2 cylinders out another 5 thou. The 2 pistons I need to replace are custom anyway,can have them made another 5 thou larger and no big deal.
Of course we will be disassembling the entire motor, cleaning, new rod bearings and rings.

Not as bad as it could have been, at least as of yet.
