2011 flat 4 to 7 pin, plug and play?
2011 flat 4 to 7 pin, plug and play?
I know that this questions has been askled before. I've searched and haven't found a definitive answer.
Here's the deal. My 2011 doesn't have the tow package. It's got the flat 4 connector. Is there a plug and play adapter to go from flat 4 to 7 pin, like the earlier F150's have? If not, I've picked up a flat 4 to 7 pin so that I can have turn, stop and running lights. I don't need trailer breaks, just 12V to charger the trailer battery. Can I add the wiring to my adapter (has the blank pins in it) just to charge the trailer battery? I understand that I need to run a 12V from the battery but don't I have to run another ground, other than the one that serves the flat 4?
I've never towed anything before. I'm going to pick up a two person camper trailer. I wand to be able to take advantage of the power package. This is all new to me, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

All full size Ford trucks post 1997 have included all options in the main wiring harness for towing, even if it does not have the tow package.
This means that there are the connections under the dash for the trailer brake controller. There is also an plug under the rear of the truck for the charge line, trailer brakes and reverse lights to complete a 7 pin connection with your 4 flat connection.
Follow the wiring of the 4 flat pin connection back about a foot. You will find a connection to the main wiring harness. That connection will have 7 wires in it OR next to this connection is a connection for those other three wires I mentioned.
There is a Factory plug and play harness available. Couldn't tell you the part number off hand.
After all the wiring is done, add a receiver hitch and you probably want to get/add an auxiliary trans cooler to complete you transformation to a tow package.

I have been unable to locate a wiring harness that is a direct fit plug and play. I asked at the dealership but they said that I should take it to an RV place and have the harness installed by them.
Most parts department employees at dealers are not that bright ( they are clocking in on this job, until they get fired for now showing up ).

2011 -> Ford -> F150
Rear bumper
Bumper and components
Trailer hitch components
Hitch ball
Receiver
Trailer hitch
Wire harness
W/o reverse sensors
W/reverse sensors
Wire harness W/o reverse sensors
W/o reverse sensors - Styleside Accessory - Styleside Accessory
09-11 $75.33 $58.00
There is also one for with reverse sensors as well ( same price, different P/N )
I do not have a service manual for the 2010 - 2011 to confirm, but the connector shown at the end ( pointing towards the hitch in the above diagram ) is usually plugged into the truck along the driver's side frame rail, need to lower the spare tire to get to it.
This is an all in 1 connector, that is for the 4 pin, 7 pin and the rear lights on the truck, not an individual plug just for the 7 pin.
You can send a message from your Tasca account or call / email them to confirm this is the correct part. Tasca's parts guy is not the next job until type guy. Southwest Ford in TX is another that has a strong parts guy. Tasca is next door in RI from you.

Thanks SSCULLY.
You know I've looked at that part a dozen times but thought that there might be a harness that went from where the flat four connected. I think that I get the picture now.

Wittom,
Make sure you get everything you need from the dealership for the factory plug and play 7/4. As I was building my "factory" tow package, I needed a bracket to mount the 7/4 wiring harness...one dealership did not have the bracket, and another dealership had both the bracket AND the wiring harness (I found this out after purchasing from the 1st dealer) but couldn't just sell me the bracket separately. A friend and I had to fabricate a bracket using a template the 2nd dealership was kind enough to provide me with.

Alright. I'm pretty sure I've got the harness figured out, thanks to SCULLY. Now, I need to figure out what fuses and relays I will need. Anyone have that kind of knowlege, or maybey could point me in that direction? I haven't been able to find the answer.
I'm just about ready to purchase a small trailer. It's just under 1k lbs. I don't think that I'll need brakes or additional cooling for this one. I would just like to be able to charge the battery.
Thanks!

Allright. I see that I need the relay and fuse. The ones that come in the package that is in the glove box or door pocket of the trucks that have the tow package. I've found the part number for the package, but I want to buy the harness and the two accessories that I need from Tasca. I need individual part numbers for the relay and fuse. This is the onse that go in #9 and #21 of the block under the hood.
I'm going to call Tasca tomorrow, as I'm going to be getting a trailer in the next week or so, and I want to have the option of power when I get it. I just know that there are a bunch of smart, helpful people here who might have this information, and might hapen to click on this thread.
Thanks!

Well, I've figured out how to get the right fuse/relay. Went to the dealership and took the bag of parts out of a new truck with tow package. Brought it to the parts window and told them what I need.
Ordered the harness from Tasca today.
Sent the payment for the trailer today. Should have it registered next week. That'll give me time to get the harness changed out. Should be good to go.
Thanks for the help! Hopefully someday this thread will help someone else too.

Just got the harness in today. It will not work. This truck isn't pre wired for battery charging and brakes.
Anyone need this harness? I'll give a discount.:o
My next step is to try to run 12v, from the power distro box. Picking up the trailer next week, so I'll have to get a home charger for the time being.

Anyhow, the harness plugged right in where the standard 4 pin harness that came with the truck plugged in. The charge line required a relay, but all 7 wires were there. Even the brake controller fuse was in place in the interior fuse box. So in a matter of minutes, all the wiring worked perfectly. We had to fabricate a fancy billet aluminum mounting bracket, because we had also installed a Uhaul hitch, and it does not have a bracket.
So, long story short, you just need the correct part.
I actually signed up just to make this post, because things went so smoothly with my old man's truck.
I would give you the part numbers, but I don't have them. It is the tail harness for the F150 with tow package. It is possible it was 2 parts, the pigtail and the plug, I can't remember. But the parts fiche / drawing below looks wrong, as the trailer wiring is unto itself, not shared with other wiring.
isthatahemi, you are right about the harness. The one that I got is the same one that you've installed. It's the two parts, the harness and the 7/4 outlet. It's exactly what I was looking for when I started this thread.
I looked at the wiring on my truck over and over, and couldn't see how what people were telling me what I need was going to work. I figured I was missing something. Turns out, my truck was missing something.
I looked at the drawing that was posted in this thread, and I'd also seen on a few OEM Ford parts web sites. The drawing is vauge, and I thought that there must be something that I can't see, that will make the part work on my truck.
What happend in my case is, for some reason my 2011 doesn't have the correct wires in the harness on the truck. What I have is a connector that only has the green, brown and yellow wires. It seems that Ford made a seperate harness, running from the engine bay to the rear of the truck, specifically for trucks without the tow package. It seems that before 2011, there was just one harness, containing all of the wires needed, even for thoes trucks without the tow package.
I have been able to solve this issue on my truck, with the help of the knowlegable people on this site. There is a thread in the electical section of this forum with the solution.
Welcome to the site, and thank you for your input. This is exactly the kind of thing that we need to help us figure these things out. I hope that you enjoy this site and are able to find information that you need as well.
