So just to clarify, one wouldn't HAVE to take the entire thing apart to clean the MAF? You can just spray it directly onto the sensor in the tube?

 

Yes... I did that yesterday. It worked fine.

hi guys......i noticed you said that the truck has a rough idle . mine does the exact same thing , rough idle but not all the time .......and only when its cold .....i just bought this truck used ,but very clean , it has a 4.2, reg cab shortbox flareside.......btw it shows no codes........ im not really worried about it , but would like to know if u guys think it is the maf sensor ? thanks btw your pics on this were perfect .

 

I have no idea what it is, but... I have a 5.4 2002 I bought new. Every once in a while it would idle rough. I found if i shut it off and restarted, it was fine. It has done this since it was new or close to new. Not much help as to why, but I attribute it to Computor/sensor clich?,

 

Great write-up and pics! I just changed my filter and it was seriously dirty. I didn't know about the MAF, but its probably as bad as the filter was. Need to do this this weekend. Great tip, Thx!

 

dump question, why pull the senor all the way out when you can spray it while it is still in the housing???

 

Cleaned my cousins the other day and we just left it in and gave everything ample time to dry...

His was pretty filthy too and with 99k miles i bet it had never been cleaned before...

 

Excellent post, Chris91LX. I followed the procedure this morning on my V6 1999 F-150. All went well, truck runs good.

I would add, however, to the instruction:
"Gently pry the cover off the housing to access the back of the MAF sensor."
something like:
"The cover is held by four plastic (brittle) clips that snap into place when the cover is on. When removing you may need to use multiple screw drivers to release and hold open each clip in turn."

I used CRC 05110 -- Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner (spray can)

It worked fine, was very convenient, and cost about $8 with tax.

But after noodling around a bit I've read posts where people claim to have cleaned it with lacquer thinner (the CRC stuff above smells like LT to me), and even high concentration alcohol. But whatever solvent used it can't leave a residue, and you must avoid touching the wires.

I've cleaned, cleaned Replaced MAF, ditched my K&N gone back to paper and after a few days again my "service engine soon" light is on. I'm headed to Autozone to have them read the code again ( they recommended a $100 MAF Refurb initially) to see if code is same or ???



I've noticed that the SES light comes on during the hot part of the day/noon hour after trk has bee driven 10 or so miles.

Just back from auto zone and a code of po171, oxygen sensor now...maybe...

 

the maf on my 04 4.6 has the same style maf i have a k&n intake so i cant say if its the same airbox style but same sensor style.

 

Does the 94 xlt have this also?. because my 302 runs rough. with new cap rotor wires plugs ect also new oxy sensor.
