99 Expedition V10 Swap!!!

Okay guys, well the past few months i've been toying with the idea of swapping the 6.8L v10 motor into my 99 5.4 Expedition. I know exactly what everyone here is thinking.........another person wondering what to do and how to do it. But, luckily for me, my 5.4 just blew a head gasket and spit a spark plug.

So I was on my way up to Lancaster CA to pickup a complete v10 with the harness and all, with only 55k on the ticker. I needed a motor and I needed it fast, so it justified spending 3k on the setup. Due to rain the nigh of going to pick up the new driveline, i had to call it off for the next day. So naturally i checked craigslist that night to see if any better deals came about before i went and spent a large chunk of change, and what to my surprise was a complete v10 with wiring harness, injectors and all. Oh yeah, and for a huge price of 250.00!!!!!!

I was so suprised that i flew down there first thing in the morning. Turned out that the motor had thrown #9 rod and nicked the cylinder wall and chewed up the crank a bit, but for 250 i think i could even part the rest of the motor out and make my money back even if it turned out to be trash. Anways, i tore it down, and just sent it off to the machine shop. They said the block will clean up as long as there are no cracks and we will see about the crank.

In the mean time, i've been pulling the 5.4 and preping some things for the v10. I'm currently serving in the United States Navy so I have to do small bits at a time since I work so much, but managed to get the motor out after about 3 days of midnight shifts. I'll post all of the pics so far, let me know if you have any suggestions about the build. And please, I really need any info that you may believe, such as good budget improvments such as stepping up to a larger torque converter with 6 lugs.......

Anyways, here we go, and for all of you wanting info or trying the swap, let me know if i can help. I'm keeping all my wiring diagrams and such.

Oh yeah, the motor bolts right in, just flip the original mounts over........

To post pics go to something like photobucket and load them there and then past the image codes over here. That what your asking?

Already read it GLC. I was talking with CAMDENLAKE on that topic. He did a great job on his swap and is really the inspiration behind the swap. He unfortunatley didn't document the entire process, and some people didn't really get the philosiphy behind it (due to ignorance on their part), but none the less, I am going to fill in whatever gaps that camdenlakes great thread may have missed. (truley a great write up)

Anyways, as far as pictures go, i can post a link to my photobucket easily, but the issue i'm having is that since i am fairly new to the forum, i don't have enough "juice" to post actual pictures into the thread. (There is probably a baseline number of posts i must post before i am able to post pictures) If anyone knows a way around that, let me know. If not, i will just post to my Photobucket for now.

to add a picture from photobucket, copy and paste the link that has [img ] at the begining, there are no restrictions to posting pics and post count. at the bottom where it says you are not allowed to attach pics means an attachment like from your computer, and noone on this site is allowed to do that

Thanks for that. I've been on other sites that allow to post pics from your computer. That might be a challenge but i'm sure we'll get around it.

Only updates so far:

Dropped off the heads and block with the machine shop to be bored over, and a good grind on the crank. The motor is a 2000 Excursion v10 with PI heads. Any good performance upgrades help on this section would be great.

I will be reusing the stock 4r100, and yes it will probably blow up soon too. I will however swap to a better Torque Converter with the 6 lugs. Again, any performance suggestions here would be great.

Distance from back of motor mount to bellhousing mount on the 5.4 v8 is very roughly 10.5 inches, and with a flip of the motor mounts, they bolt right to the v10 block in the exact same location with a measurement of 10.5 inches. Reading from CAMDENLAKEs v10 swap, it appears that the stock v10 exhaust manifolds will exit in just about the same location as well.

A 2000 Excursion computer will most likely be used (depending on VATS). As for the wiring, the only harness to swap so far is the engine harness, which came with everything. I will reuse the transmission portion for my current transmission, along with the stock connections between all of the above to the Computer.

I will however have to change some pin locations and do some pinouts to control the transmission and engine correctly. I currently have some basic PCM Diagrams, but I might need to source some more.

off the top of my head I think everything will cross over from the 5.4 to the 6.8 V10 as far as front accessories go. I know the rotating assembly is the same(except for crank and amount of things is 2 less), but no need for that since i will be boring over quite a bit. That being said, is anyone looking for a 5.4 block.

let me know, as for i will have leftovers.
