2005 Slow fueling issue...

Hey guys.

I have a 2005 F150 XLT, and every now and then when putting gas in the thing, it acts like the gas tank is backed up... when it's only half full, and the pump will cut off. Sometimes it will only take 2-3 gallons at a time, and I have to wait for it to "vent" the air in the tank out before it will allow me to continue filling it up.

I assume this is likely a venting issue, however it passed emissions with no issues at all..

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might look at to see about getting this fixed up?

Thanks folks.

JP in Atlanta.

My 96 does that depending on which gas station I go to. If the nozzle has a rubber boot on it it usually does this. If the nozzle doesn't have a boot I don't seem to have a problem.

Not sure if it's your problem or not but that's what I noticed on mine.

It's your back flow line. If you look under your truck you will see a secondary line going to the main fill. Some call this the vapor (for us truckers who deliver gas to gas stations). When I use to work for Dejana and we did Ford body modifications if the vapor wasn't set at a right angle we would get guys coming back, having the pump shut off after a few gallons. A few tip ties putting the vapor line at a aggressive level always helped.

I believe it's a 26 Gal tank? I've never put more than that in.

I'll take a look at the angle of the backflow line.

Anyone have a schematic handy?
