5.4 engine ticking

Hey Everyone, New here, but ive got an 05' crew cab f150 4wd, and when my truck is running i can hear a ticking noise which is nonstop! Its extremely loud at the front of my truck and the ticking gets faster the higher my rpm's raise. I believe its the Injectors fireing, but i just wanted a second opinion! I can hear it in my cab if my windows are down with no radio or air. Its extremely aggrivating! If you have any advice please let me know, ive tried valve cleaner and injector cleaner, new oil, and oil filter, and gas!

EDIT!-Found the problem, right now i cant remember what part and what not it was, but 2 pieces of rubber got sucked into the motor, and just bounced around, destroying everything. Dont remember what they were from off the top of my head. So all this cham phaser talk and what not, isnt always true lmao.

My 01 did the same thing all the time, until the plug blew out of the head... May want to check into it...

Highly unlikely a plug will blow out of a 3v engine. They usually break trying to get them out!

Your injectors shouldn't be making that loud of a noise but the '05's were plagued with bad injectors so someone else with an '05 that had injector problems may corroborate this ticking noise. Or do a search for the injector problems on the 2005's. Ford even offered an extended warranty on them.

Otherwise, it could be a bomb.

It may be the cam phasers they tick all the time..sometimes the get louder when they are getting ready to go out.

If it's a light ticking, it's the injectors openning and closing, perfectly normal. Sounds a lot like lifters that need adjusting. If it is more of a knocking sound toward the front of the engine, most likely the cam phasers.

sounds to me like you have an exhaust leak. my 2005 crew cab makes a ticking sound when I get into it or when I start it up. Check around where the exhaust manifold meets the heads, see if theres any carbon... mine is around the #3 cylinder. hope this helps

I just had both of the cam phasers replaced on my 05 5.4. The way to tell if it is bad cam phasers.....is that they will not make a knocking noise when the engine is cold, only when it is warm. Also, the sound goes away with acceleration.

So, what you described, it's probably not cam phasers, but I thought I would throw that out there.

PCV Valves have been known to tick too. Those are pretty cheap to change out.

I just bought one an '05 as well. It ticks like elund126 is talking about. Doesn't do it cold, and doesn't always do it when it's warm, but most of the time. My cousin's '06 has been making the same tick for 70k miles with no issues. Heard another doing the same thing this weekend.

Cam phasers, huh? What the hell is a cam phaser? God I'm getting old or something.

The engine has variable valve timing. The phasers advance and retard the cams.

hey guys - I have the same thing going on in my 2004 5.4. It has now been at the dealer a week while they try to figure it out. They already installed the secoond set of cam phasers and new timing chain tensioners with no luck. They said the next step may be to replace the heads.

Hey, Im new on this site, actually been on this site just looking around and decided to register so I could respond to this question, I've been with Ford for 6 years now and im fully Ford certified. I do alot of these 5.4l 3v engines at work, In fact pretty much the only one in dealership that will work on them. I have done ALOT of cam phasers and timing chain tensioners and vct solenoids and solenoid valve bodys on these engines. Alot of times just doing cam phasers will not fix the audible knocking noise.... I suggest if you are going to do the cam phasers.... do timing chain tensioners and vct solenoids as well. About 8 months ago I had one come to the dealership and I installed new phasers and chain tensioners and it was still noisy. Ford sent a ford engineer to look at the engine and we found the problem.... which was debris caught in a passage way in the phaser solenoid body. If you flip the solenoid over and remove allen head plug from valve body that is where debris gets trapped. 5.4l 3v are GREAT engines as long as the oil is changed every 3000 and motorcraft filters are used.
The 3 biggest problems of the 3 valve engine are #1 cam phasers can be noisy. #2 The rubber seal on the back of the tensioners push out and bleed off oil pressure causing slack in timing chain. #3 vct solenoids and valve bodys getting contaminated with debris and oil pressure is restricted causing audible noise and in some cases driveability issues.
Anyway dont mean to ramble on, Just trying to help, I have wasted alot of time just replacing phasers on these engines, I now try to discount labor and parts so customer can afford to fix it right. Good luck, Hope this helps, Bob
