Were you in 4x4 when you parked it?

I believe if theres a vacuum leak in your 4x4 engage/disengage system, the vehicle will revert into 4x4 mode, to prevent being stuck.. but one of the other members can verify this.

A vacuum leak will leave the axle in the same position it was in before the leak. Are you sure that it is actually in 4x4? On dry pavement it will bind when you try to turn. Is the 4x4 light on? Low?

How did you manage that? Repeatedly turning the shift switch?

As per the owner Guide:
1. Bring the vehicle to a stop.
2. Depress the brake.
3. Place the gearshift in N (Neutral) (automatic transmission) or depress
the clutch (manual transmission).
4. Move the 4WD control to the 4H
or 4L position.

1. disconnect the battery
2. Remove motor from t-case and manually switch it back to 2WD worked for my '97 and never did the same BS again
Removing the motor is very easy then just vise grip the shaft and turn it will show you what direction

Thank you! Thank you! I did this today and it worked just like you said. I left my 1997 F150 in 4x4 High for 3 days because my driveway was snow covered and it would not go back into 2 wheel drive once the snow was gone. After I did step 1 and 2, reinstalled the transfer case motor and hooked the battery back up, it works just like it is supposed to.
