2006 Fx4 Engine Cutting Out

I have a 2006 FX4 and a few times now, the engine has cut out on me, without warning. I believe it has only happened at low RPM (once going through a bumpy intersection, once just before merging into traffic after coming around the on-ramp, and again today, in rush hour traffic). After it stalls, I have to completely turn the engine off and restart it or my throttle doesn't work (I'm guessing the computer goes into safe mode). There's no engine hesitation before or after it cuts out. It's running fine and then just dies, without warning.

The engine has 62,000 miles and otherwise runs fine. I'm really leaning towards something to do with the computer or a sensor. I just had it in a few months ago to fix an ICU that went bad in one of the cylinders and had them replace all of the plugs.

Is anybody aware of any recalls or similar symptoms?

Thank you in advance...

I have a 06 XLT that usually cuts out while letting off on the gas peddal. The code that comes up on diagnostics is p0121 Throttle/pedal position sensor a circuit range/performance. After I add a fuel treatment it clears up for a while then returns. I have just talked to a sales man in the Ford parts department and he said it sounds like the throttle body may need to be cleaned. Have not tried it yet.

My truck has done this twice now - usually when coasting or maybe just after taking off the gas pedal as described above. Engine goes into Failsafe Mode and has to be shut down to restart.
I'm scheduled for my 95K service on Wednesday and will ask about the diagnostic code and have them clean the throttle body. Anyone elase have this problem with a different solution?

Thx,

Chris

I have on 06 FX4. My wife told me one time she was driving and the truck shut off. I thought it was weird and then a few weeks later it happened to me!

It has only happened twice since I've owned it(55k miles), so at this point I didn't give it much attention.

But just wanted to throw out that it happened to me as well.

sounds like this is a common problem. I'll ask the service tech tomorrow morning what he thinks (not telling him I already have an idea) and see what he has to say!
Having the truck die on me is not going to fly!

Ended up getting my 100K tune up done at 95K yesterday so we'll see if that solves the cutting out problem. I had two bad plugs and no error codes for the TPS. $800+ later it better be fixed!

I hope the 100K service solves your issue. My 2004 5.4L 3V Lariat began cutting out when coming to a stop or when driving in parking lots. It gives no warning befor it dies. Have had the fail safe mode come on and have check engine light. So far it always starts right back up asif nothing happened and runs great. It began doing this at 83,000mi. Now at 105,900 and still doing it.
Been to dealership twice with no solution. Have had MAF replaced once and cleamed the second trip. New 02 sensors. had computer reprogrammed. None of it solved my issue. Overall the truck runs like a champ and it only dies on me every now and then so I have due to limited $$ had to just live with it. Anyway good luck and I hope it works out for you

In my mind there are only 3 ways the engine can die:

1) loss of fuel
2) loss of spark
3) PCM problem

I would rule out #3 because if electronics fail is mostly a dead/not dead. So, seems like a drop in fuel pressure or the ignition system cutting out.

I couldn't tell you component is the problem in those 2 areas though. If it happens to me more frequently than the two times it happened I'm going to look into it further.

Does anyone with an Edge have this issue??? I don't have one but I thought they could log/record engine data and if it ever cuts out maybe it could tell us something..........

It's early yet, but my truck is running great since the 100K tune. Hopefully the cutting out issue has gone away.
I've never had a vehicle that went 100K on a set of plugs. Pretty impressive but I will change out in 50K next time if I haven't bought a diesel Excursion by then.

I have replaced the TPS sensor. The truck still cut out after. Took the air filter assembly apart and had someone step on the gas. The throttle was sticking slightly when they let up on the gas. I have cleaned the throttle body, hopefully that will fix the problem will let you know.

Have put on around 600miles since I have cleaned the throttle body. Engine has not cut out or went into failsafe since it was cleaned. It looks like it has solved my problem.

Unhappy

My 2003 F150 Supercrew, with 56000 miles and all original parts is having similar problem: https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8...ml#post4029182

But once engine cuts off, it won't start. It tries to but won't start. If I let it set for hours, then it will startup again like nothing's wrong. Today, I had it towed to mechanic and he think the problem with the computer...

I'm amazed how many people are having this problem. I found this site while trying to figure out what is wrong with mine - 06, 5.4L. It has died three times in two weeks on the highway, all about 10 minutes into the drive. It did it today agian. Just driving along and it instantly goes into safe mode (idle only) and then today about 5 seconds into safe mode it just died completely, losing power steering. Not fun. I want to be sure it's the throttle body before I drop $600+ into it. Any point in trying fuel injector cleaner, etc in the fuel?

This article supersedes TSB(s) 08-5-13, 07-23-12 and 06-25-8 to update the Service Procedure.

ISSUE:
Some 2004-2006 4.6L and 5.4L F-150 (excluding F-150 Heritage), 2006 5.4L Mark LT, 2005-2006 6.8L E-350 / E-450, 2005-2006 6.8L F-Super Duty (F-250 to F-550), 2006 6.8L F-53 Motorhome Chassis, 2006-2007 4.0L Explorer 4 dr, 2007 4.0L Explorer Sport Trac, 2006-2007 4.0L Mountaineer, 2006 4.0L Mustang, 2006 - 2007 4.6L 3V Explorer / Explorer Sport Trac / Mountaineer, 2006 4.6L 3V Mustang, and 2005-2007 Crown Vic / Grand Marquis / Towncar vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms: drive-away hesitation, loss of RPM on deceleration, difficulty starting, and/or idle RPM less than desired. Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0506 and/or P0505. These conditions may appear after battery disconnect, dead battery condition, or keep alive memory (KAM) reset. The symptoms may be due to engine deposits in the throttle leading to airflow less than desired.

ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 53.9 and higher or 54.1 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2008.1 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com. The calibration contains a sludge compensation strategy for the throttle body.
Turn the key off to re-initialize the PCM. This will allow the sludge compensation strategy to learn.
With the vehicle in park or neutral and A/C off, start vehicle and allow engine to reach normal operating temperature(greater than 170 °F (77 °C) coolant temperature). Run an additional 5 minutes to allow sufficient learning time.
While the engine is running, using IDS datalogger or equivalent, check the PID value of ETC_TRIM.
If ETC_TRIM value is 3.5 degrees, and/or DTC P115E is present, then replace the electronic throttle body (ETB), following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-04B.
If ETC_TRIM value is less than 3.5 degrees and DTC P115E is not present, but driveability concerns persist, the ETB is not the likely cause of the concern and replacement is not necessary. Continue with normal PC/ED diagnostics.
NOTE: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A PCM AND TCM REQUIRE COORDINATED REPROGRAMMING. THIS COORDINATED REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE MUST BE FOLLOWED EXACTLY AS OUTLINED BY THE IDS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE KEY CYCLE PROCEDURE WITHOUT WAITING FOR THE IDS PROMPTS, WILL CAUSE THE COORDINATED REPROGRAMMING TO FAIL. THE PCM WILL BE UPDATED BUT THE TCM WILL NOT BE UPDATED AND NEW FILES WILL NOT BE INSTALLED. IT IS CRITICAL TO FOLLOW THE IDS PROMPTS. SOME VEHICLES MAY REQUIRE SEVERAL DAYS OF DRIVING FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO FULLY ADAPT. REPROGRAMMING CONCERNS/ERRORS MAY BE CAUSED BY THE DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) OR VEHICLE COMMUNICATION MODULE (VCM) BECOMING DISCONNECTED, LOW BATTERIES ON THE INTEGRATED DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM (IDS) OR THE IDS GOING INTO ANY TYPE OF SLEEP MODE, OR LOW VEHICLE BATTERY VOLTAGE. IF THERE WAS AN INTERRUPTION DURING REPROGRAMMING, MAKE SURE THE ORIGINAL IDS SESSION THAT WAS CREATED FOR THE VEHICLE IS NOT DELETED. IF THE ORIGINAL VEHICLE SESSION IS NOT USED OR DELETED BEFORE THE MODULES ARE COMPLETELY REPROGRAMMED, FURTHER REPROGRAMMING ERRORS CAN OCCUR. THE MODULE RECOVERY PROCEDURE IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE AND IT IS CRITICAL THAT MODULE SWAPPING IS NOT PERFORMED FROM VEHICLE TO VEHICLE. TO REGAIN COMMUNICATION WITH A MODULE THAT HAS BEEN ERASED DURING REPROGRAMMING, RESUME THE ORIGINAL SESSION ONCE THE IDS IS RE-BOOTED.
