In exactly the same area as the other OP. Most failures with 4x4 on the 97-03 are the front axle not engaging.
This can be caused by:
1. Bad engagement solenoid
2. Vacuum line leak to the front axle vacuum motor.
3. Debris packed up around the vacuum motor so it can't turn.
4. Bad vacuum motor.
5. Broken shift fork.

alright so i got under the truck today n saw the my tranny is engaging the drive shaft is turning and the little accuator is moving. i jacked up the front end and with the truck n 4hi i spun the front tire and the other tire didnt move. whats the cause of this. is it a busted hub or is it inside the pumpkin on the front axle?

i dont have a problem with the actuator so thats why i didnt bother reading it its eathier ther fork, the hubs or something inside the axle. when i got under to look at the fork going into the axle i noticed that there is no play in the shift fork when the actuator is in 2wd but when i switch to 4hi and the actuator pulls in i notice that there is play in fork to the point that i can almost pull the fork out of where it fits in the actuator. does this mean its broken?

What I did was to disconnect the vacuum motor from the lever and move it out of the way. I then put a piece of pipe about 18" long over the end of the lever, and while spraying PB Blaster around the bushing, I started working the lever back and forth. At first it was very tight and it took some time, but eventually enough working and PB that it loosened up to the point that it was smooth as silk.
I think one thing that is important, whenever you think about it, is to actuate the 4x4 while driving. Just flip it on long enough to engage it and flip it off. This will keep it loosened up so that it's available when you need it, especially if you live in the salt belt.
