I dropped the pan to change the trans filter in my 03 with 4R70W and there was a 1.5 inch "plunger-like" plastic piece laying in the pan. It has an o-ring on it. I don't know where it came from but I assume it has a purpose. Anybody know what it is or what I'm to do with it? Thanks in advance.

 

SOLVED! After further research it appears this is the dipstick plug that is inserted prior to assembly, when the dipstick tube is inserted the plug apparently gets pushed out and sits in the pan until next service. I guess it shows thiat I am performing the first service. FYI

 

Sounds like the plug used to fill the dipstick hole during assy. When they build the truck, and they shove the dipstick tube in place, it knocks the plug into the pan where it stays until the trans fluid and filter get changed. It's totally harmless, just throw it in the trash, or save it as a souvenier.

 

Haha yep. I kept mine after changing the trans fluid. Just a little keep sake for remembrance haha. I still have it in my room.

 

if you keep it and ever have you tranny out of the car, you plug the extension housing, and use the plug to cover the dipstick tube if you fill the tranny before reinstalling

 

When the F150 forum has a all-hands party, you can put that thing on a necklace and it will be good for the first half-dozen draft beers.

My new to me 01 SCREW has 170000 miles and I wanted to change the fluid. Dropped the pan, lo and behold, there was the plunger! Drained the TC, blew out the tranny cooler lines and put her all back together and she shifts like a champ.

NO. Its the 1000th f150 off the line and you can turn that plug in for a brand new 2010 F150 of your choice!!

 

Take it to your nearest Ford dealer to have the o-ring decoded to see if you won a 1974 Pinto!

 

It just shows that your transmission has never been serviced. You can throw it away

I used to save them, then when time came, when we thought might be last service before that car was replaced and sold at auction, throw 2 or 3 back in. These were state police cars. I always left at least one in them.
