Thanks! That explains and confirms a lot of things for me. The truck has over 115K and the odometer/trip meter quit working @ 103K. The AC compressor AND door actuator has also just been replaced. Sooooooo, now either the retaining clip broke, got loose and the loop came off, or......maybe the spring broke on the pointer, dropped to low and the loop fell off.
Had to have AC, especially this summer, so spent a little over a grand there. I really hate to see how these little (and big ticket) things keep showing up, but for now, I think I'll live with them.
