The loop attaches to the pointer. On the pointer there is a nub that the loop goes over.On the other end there is a clip that will attach to the steering colimn shroud. You will probably have to take the dash bezel off and maybe the cluster to get to the slide. Making sure that that the shifter is in park, then you pull on the cable until the pointer lines up with the "P" and you attach the the clip to the shroud. The pointer is spring loaded. A shop manual will show you how to do it.Idont have one for a 1997, but other cars I have worked on thiat is the procedure. Hope this helps
