Use a garden sprayer to clean the engine bay. Once through with the cleaner (I use Simple Green 2:1), boar's hair brush, and then use the same sprayer to rinse. I can clean an entire engine spotless with less than 2 gallons of water. I have however blasted mine with a power washer as well and I have never had a problem.
