Can the pan be hotter then the fluid?

Okay, this may be a REALLY stupid question but I can't figure it out.. I just had a tranny temp gauge installed(in the pan) and I don't think it is accurate- I pulled a trailer and the gauge slowly crept up to 150, but I have a laser thermometer and when I check the pan right around the sending unit it reads 180 or so.. :-/ i think the brand is maximum performance..

Tranny fluid temps are a lot more accurate when you simply read them out of the OBD2 port with a Scangauge.

My tranny runs right around 145 according to my Gryphon and many other owners of the Gryphon report temps right around 150. So if your thermo-meter is accurate then yes, the pan does get hotter.

I bet the laser is picking up radiant heat from the exhaust.
