4.2l to larger - motor swap?

I have a 2000 F-150 XLT with a 4.2l and 5-speed.
I was wanting to know if anyone has swapped out the 4.2l for a larger motor?
Something that will be able to put in and not have to gut the wires/computer.
I was thinking of just getting the 4.6l or something like that. I'm hoping to be able to keep as much stock/OEM.

Thanks for any info!

Whatever you swap into it your gonna have to change out the computer, transmission, wiring, etc etc...

Why are you wanting to swap?? motor problems or just want more power
Either way for what your truck books for I would just buy another one

To add... the 4.6 doesnt have much more power than the 4.2..... to build it up to the level of a 5.4 your gonna put at least $3k into the motor

X2

Also the bolt patterns on the bell housing for the tranny are different on the 4.2s than the ones on the 4.6 & 5.4s so theres more $ you have to spend.

Cheaper just to drop in a 5.4, wiring, computer, tranny from 5.4, etc..

well here is what i'm thinking. I have built a lot of cars, drag mustangs etc... I have an 01 f150 4.2 standard flare side 4x4 sport. It now has a 9.75 rear. I am going to do a motor trans swap but just not sure what to put in it. I came across a 1999 turbo diesel f250 wrecked but runs perfect. I want this engine trans in my truck. The larger f250 truck also comes with a 5.4 gas engine as do some of my body styles f150 too. So I know the diesel engine and my 4.2 can fit the same body's engine compartment, But the turbo piping and the 1999 f250's large (&heavy ) transmission may require some extra modifications, as the cross member modification. Also I'll most definitley need serious suspension upgrades.. . My other options or - OUR other options for an engine swap would be a 302 because they share the same bolt pattern as the 4.2 transmission. But I'll need a whole ecu harness etc... I've searched every site out there, and wish some one else has done this diesel swap into the 97-04 f150 body style. I can use the whole truck for parts but would LOVE to find info on what fits exactly before I try this, I'm only thinking about this whole thing because my 4.2 smokes badly at 147000 miles ! The worst engine i've ever owned, leaking seals, bad heads, just a mess of a under powered engine

1. No. The Triton gasser and the PSD are nowhere even close to being in the same ballpark in terms of dimensions. I see you working, but it doesn't work anywhere quite that easily.

2. Don't even bother with a 302. Even the Exploder version barely made more power stock than the 4.2L. Why waste that effort? If you want power that fits, scavenge a Lightning drivetrain. The End.

The only reason I was thinking of using my diesel from a 1999 f250 was because of having the whole truck for parts.. Apparantly it has already been done but only as a 2wd. The 4wd transmission does not fit or inteferes entirely some how.. I would like to make it work but Time is not available and I like the 4wd too much to go 2wd. I just found out that 1998-2000 there was a f250 light duty made. A 5.4 engine in my 1997-2003 body style f150 with way better tow and power ratings than my year f150, aslo had heavy duty springs which i would like reguardless.. Another problem, well my only problem with an engine swap in New York is getting the vehicle inspected. The vin Number has to match the ecu I use. I need the name of a company that will change vin numbers to my old vin number in the ecu so I can continue to drive my ride. I know that mechanically anything can be made to fit.... I would like to find a 5.4 and a automatic to swap in.. Diesel would be way cool. Mabey i can go carburated if i register my vehicle as a show ride or something?? Guess i ought to find out New York States DMV rules before i even research this any further. then I can figure a route to go

OK, thanks for the info.

Nothing wrong with the motor at the moment, was thinking ahead. (118,000 miles)
I always thought the 4.6 would go right in. the 4.6L came with the 5-speed so I thought it would bolt up the same. So does the 4.6 have a different 5-speed then the 4.2L ??
I knew that the 5.4 only had the automatic, no 5-speed option.

Well I guess if it comes down to it and I get to the point, I will just put another 4.2L back in it.

Hey, Thanks again!

Scottie
