Not trying to be a smartass, but why do you need a tach? The engine has a rev limiter, you can't overrev it.

this doesnt help.. but ive got a tach and im glad i do. it just looks good.

my xl sport is an 03 and the 03s came with the xlt gauge cluster

u could always do it the expensive way and go to the dealership and have them install an xlt cluster and program it and all that good stuff. or you can go the cheap way and buy an aftermarket tach and install it :-)

i know it has a rev limiter its just nice to have a tach to where you can see how many rpms your pullin you dont get tachs to try to over rev the engine yeah i was gonna go the inexpensive way and get an aftermarket tach but the problem is i dont know where to splice the signal wire from the tach into on old models with the dis and the coil you just splice into the coil wire but now you got all this damn technology and i dont know what to do with it lol yeah i dont have an xl sport its just the base models of base models lol kinda sucks but good gas mileage tho

Just go the easy route. Check out a local junk yard or ebay and get am OEM cluster that came with a tach. I did that for mine, but its a much harder mod for the 97-98s because we need the analog odometers, 99+ tach clusters are super easy to find. They are simple plug&play, no wiring or soldering needed. Total swap takes about an hour. With the digital cluster you can even get the dealer to reset the new odometer to the exact mileage of your old one. Can't do that with the analog one though. I got my cluster from a junkyard for $50. If you want I can pm you the link to my How-to cluster swap.

thats sweet so if i found a wrecked cluster out of an xlt it would work then? would it have to be one out of the same truck ie, engine and trans and what not or just any old cluster outta a truck around the same year? do you know how much it would be to get the dealer to reset it that would be cool cus i havent torn that part of the dash apart and i dont wanna break nothin all i did was a stereo thanks

if u find one from a wrecked truck (99-03(04 heritage) ) you can have PATS disabled with your tuner and just hook it up... but then ur mileage would be way off.

OR you can buy a brand new one and have ford install it with the correct mileage. which cost like 400 or more i dont know

Why not?

It's a great diagnostic tool to have.

Imagine if anyone with a Panther car had one available from the factory...they could decipher TC shudder from bad coils much easier...

If you need diagnostics, you can put the digital odometer into the tach mode.

Well I've got a '98 and I went to my local junkyard and after an hour (looking in over 50+ 10th gen F-150's) I found ONE 1998 Expy and I open the door and the only thing missing is the dang cluster
