My reman long block "requires" an oil pump prime for the initial start-up. What does this mean? Is this as simple as filling the oil filter?

I searched the forums looking for oil pump priming and found a 5 year old thread that debated the merits of priming the oil filter when changing oil, but didn't find any info on a new engine start-up.

pull the fuel pump fuse and let it crank a little bit, replace fuse then fire it up.

 

these mod motors dont have the provisions to prime the pump like you could in the old days.

 

I just start 'em up. They prime fast. It's really not much different than starting your engine after an oil change.

i wouldnt just start it up on a reman or a brand new motor, i was taught to always check oil pressure with a manual pressure gauge screwed into the side of the block like the older days. yea on these motors pull the fuel pump fuse and turn it over and make sure you have the correct pressure. just saying, what "if" part of the motor was assembled wrong and you didnt have correct oil pressure well then you either will seize the motor or over a period of time have premature bearing failure.

 

When we would dyno test a reman or hand built modular (these engines were not preprimed) We would basicly just install the engine in a test cell, fill the oil pan with 6 quarts of oil and start it up. You just don't want to rev it at high RPM's until the pressure builds. The suggestion regarding disabling the fuel pump is a good one as well. I would personally fill the oil filter before starting as it's easy to do and helps get the oil flowing a little faster but not required.
