Just curious if extra leaf is in play at all times like first two, or only hits under load like third one.

I went looking but, I don't have a picture of it that shows it... sorry.

The Platinum that we drove for the Media Day event was a Max Tow-equipped version. Plus, the suspension module talked about this fairly extensively...

You're correct in your assumption that only two are in play with normal weight. The third tier of the leaf comes in to play once loaded or under load (or extreme suspension necessity).

But doesn't it say the extra spring only w/18's. And based on your picks (unless I'm confusing the various reviews I read) the platinum Max tow had 20's.

Where do you get that there is one extra spring?

The Ford Build And Price says "upgraded springs." This other site says, "different rear springs" with "larger shackle brackets, and integrated rear bumper with class 4 receiver hitch. 20 to 1 steering. more gussets on receiver hitch."

My bad, "I meant" upgraded spring. So would that mean that the third bottom/last spring would be thicker/heavier?

On the Canadian site it says upgraded spring no matter what the tire size? Could be typo.

I'll try to look at the media information that they gave us for you tomorrow, Power Kid. I inadvertently left that material at my office over the weekend. Not sure I'll have any information for you but, I'll give it a go...

I remember the one suspension engineer talking about how the third leaf only was engaged when it was under load though... not sure about the correlation between wheel size and such.

My point exactly. I could kinda see not adding the extra capability with a 20" wheel since no option (factory or aftermkt) for a LT 20 in factory size.... but then why not w the 17" option which is a LT from factory. Mind you tire rating never maters with factory recomendations as you'll always max out on GVW b4 Tire load rating or Max tow rating. Another exampe of this is the 07-08 GM vortec max pkg.... Significant higher tow rating etc but not even a LT tire option from the factory. You got the HD trans, rear end etc but P rated rubber?

Why do you want 17" wheels? You can't get 17" wheels with the Lariat, King Ranch and Patinum trucks, anyway. There is one 17" optional wheel on the FX4 - they probably prevent you from getting the upgraded springs on that 17" wheel to reduce build combinations or maybe the wheels aren't strong enough. This is my guess.

However, you can get the upgraded springs with the 18" wheels and LT Goodyear tires. If you want the upgraded springs and 17" wheels, you have to go with the Heavy Duty Payload Package truck.

Never said I do? Infact I don't. Have 18's now. Like the new 18"s. I can get 10 ply Toyo A/Ts so I'm happy.... Looking at the wheels, I'd bet the farm the 17" wheel is the strongest of the available on a Fx4. But not sure why that was brought up? I would be tempted to get the 20's if I could get 10 ply rubber in the factory size. Pics of the FX4s w/ 20's look v good.

By the looks of it that platinum dont have the max trailer tow package. That comes with the larger side mirrors. Or are those the mirrors that come with it. I hope they are as i hate the larger ones.
