Expedition: Convert to towing package?

I'm looking at 05-06 Expeditions and some have tow packages and some dont. The ones without have a lot of other options I do like while the ones with tow packages are pretty barebones. I am pretty handy with a wrench (put in my Magnum Powers blower on my 01 Lightning in the parking lot at my old apartment) so my question is, does anybody know what it would take to convert an Expy without a towing package to one with a towing package? I have seen what is on the older Expy's but on the 05+ models I see conflicting reports about what it has. Some say there is a bigger alt, others say a better tranny cooler and radiator. I tried figuring it out by going to Autozone and getting a "replacement" alternator, but the funny thing is there was a 110 and 130 depending on a built-in navigation system or not. There was also no difference in radiators. Are things "beefy" enough on the newer ones that the only thing possibly needed is a better tranny cooler and 7pin wiring? If so, that would be great because it would really open up my options. Can somebody who has experience with the newer models confim for me?

The towing package in my Expy (08) includes, tranny cooler, oil cooler, wiring harness for wiring the electric brake controller, 7 pin harness, larger radiator (4 core), and, I also ordered it with the 3:73 rear end.

That is basically typical towing package. My 98 F-150 has the towing package as well, and, all the same as listed above, with the exception of the rear gearing. It has the 3:55 ratio.

As far as doing all of this yourself, it is not rocket science.

I will add, that, Auto Zone is probably not the best place to do your research. Stuff like that, you will more than likely just have to look and see if it is on there or not. The rear gearing size should be on a metal tag on the right side of the gear housing. If you need help decoding it just let me know.

Happy hunting!

Well I used NAPA too and they had the same results. I don't think the 05's had those same extras as the 08s (I think they just had big tranny coolers). Do you know for a fact the 05s use the same thing because there was a big hubub a while back that Ford was using the same radiator starting in 01 for tow and non tow packages. I know the axle codes already from the door tags (easier than the metal tag on the housing).

I cannot verify the 05 using the larger radiators or not. (not at the moment anyways) I will have to call my friend tomorrow and find out. BUT, the TOW PACKAGE has ALWAYS included the larger radiator in my experience. But that is what both my 98 and my 08 has. I will find out and let you know.

My wife's expy came without the towing package. I added the wiring for the 7 pin harness.

I think they all come with the same size tranny cooler, maybe not.

For the radiator, it came with a 1"core rad. When I looked at upgrading it, the "super cooling" radiator has a 1 and 1/2" core, I think. I know it wasn't as big as the 2" in my F150.
