Hello, I'm New to the forum and have my first question.

I have a 99 4X4 w/ 3" body lift and 35" BF's AT's. This larger tire diameter is trowing off my speedometer and odometer.

Can I simply change some setting int the computer to compensate, or do I need to change gears?

Any pros/cons for either? Thanks.

 

you should change gears, but that wont help the speedo/odometer. Gears will help put you back into the proper powerband, allow your transmission to operate normally and last longer.

You need a tuner for recalibration. They can re-set your computer to tell it what tire size you have. You can find these tuners online. Some dealerships can do this as well, but not all. I think your model also needs a speedo gear swap.

Are the tires the reason the shift from first gear is real stiff? If I keep my foot out of it, it's not so bad. All other gears appear to shift fine.

Are changing gears difficult for both trans and spedo? Where would one look for recommendations on what to buy?

If your odometer is digital and not the old analog gauge then you can recalibrate the speedo with a programmer.Not sure if any of the early 99's had analog gauges, Ford made the switch to digital with the 99+ but there may be a chance that they put the older 97-98 style gauges in the early 99s to use up their inventory of them.

4.56 will help your trans survive and also help your mileage and power come back and they may even help correct your speedo (at least bring it closer)

even a cheap canned tuner will help correct your speedo, once your speedo is corrected your shift points will be back to stock
