MOVED: 1998 Ford F150 Ranger XLT Check Engine

MOVED: 1998 Ford F150 Ranger XLT Check Engine

Hello,

We have a 1998 Ford Ranger F150 XLT, and the Check Engine (CE) light came on, took it to the dealship and they got code P0171 and P0174. Well they did the work and after a day, the CE light came back on, so they changed the Fuel Pump and the next day, the same problem, the CE lights is back on. We took to another place and they tried to fix and the next day, the CE is on again! What is this code mean, and what do I need to do to get it fixed? Will the truck be able to get it's State Inspection with this CE light on? I'm in RI. Please e-mail me ASAP on any suggestion to fix this problem? E-mail is albopooh@aol.com. I read it may be an O2 sensor? But wouldn't the dealship figure that out? Any help will be great!!!

Okay, what engine's in it? And other than the fuel pump, has anything else been replaced?

P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 System Too Lean (Bank 2)
i'd say its got a vacuum leak somewhere.

I had the same problem on my 98 F150 XL with a 4.2 If you look on the driver side of your phlenum at the very back there is a vacuum hose that has a 90 degree elbowe that is probably leaking and needs to be replaced. there are two coolant lines that are connected very near to the vacuum line so you can trace them back. The coolant lines start at the front of the engine where the heater hoses connect. There is another elbow in the front that connects to the PVC valve it is located at the front of the plenum on the under side. I have replaced both of these elbows and ended the code problem. the elbows will have to come from Ford and are 13.00 each in Tulsa Oklahoma. A lot cheaper than a fuel pump. I know I put on a fuel pump first. I am sure this will fix your ride.

DITTO, What Lee said !!!!

I cleared my code by replacing the entire PCV Assembly, (includes elbow to rear of plenum on my 98 5.4 V8. I also used CRC Cleaner and sprayed the MAF Sensor until it was all shiney and new looking. My 2 codes have been cleared since March.
Next time use the search function on this site. You could type in P0174 for example, and you find alot of info on this problem. It has helped me out on a few fixes.

PS: Can't believe the dealer replaced the fuel pump !!!!
What is up with that. They should have checked the fuel pressure on the fuel-rail 1st. What did they do on the 1st visit ?

I changed the fuel pump on my truck after the dealer where I bougth the truck new and had serviced it told me the fuel pump was bad and it would cost a smal fortun to change it. I brought it home drained the fuel and changed the pump for about $200.00. The code came back then I started looking else where and found the bad vacuum lines.

The dealer just assumed the pump was bad. They need to do beter work with the price of shop time now as well as parts.
