$2400.00 bill.........need advise!!!
with the stock 5.0 in my 89 f-150 i got 9 mpg i ditched the fuel injection threw on a little 570 holley, big cam, ported the hell outa the heads my self bigger valves springs ect., air gap intake hei dizzy with an accell coil and ford racing wires and a 3500 stall converter, some long tube headers, 2.5in duel exhaust and turbo mufflers, accell filter and now i get 15mpg with 33s and 3.73s on my gas mileage tune and 12mpg with advaced timing and a different secondary spring+ there are o sensors to go bad i just cut all the wires out and threw the sensors in the trash
ps: i also build race motors on the side and this was just spare parts i had sitting around for the most part probably only spend like $400 to do this and originally did it because the motor would go crazy when i went in water past the oil pan

An 89 with a TBI? I thought TBI was long gone by then....my 88 is MPI. I don't recall seeing a TBI newer than 86.
Either way, with 9mpg, something was wrong that caused that. Had everything been in good tune it would have been twice that.
Carbs may be cheap, easy to diagnose, easy to modify, easy to fit to a modified motor, simple etc. but thats where it ends.
With money, knowledge, the right tools etc., MPI is much nicer, especially for a daily driver.

i could see the timing chain issue. REad my post about the cam shaft issue with my 04. It is scary!! Glad mine is under warranty!!
With those miles, it is sounding like there is an alectrical issue, i have to agree with that. I also agree, take it to an independent shop, or an ASE cert. mechanic. That or take it to an Autozone nearby, they read codes for free!!!
Good luck bro!

I give up
So yesterday I took my truck to my "trusted" dealer. Too make a long story short, wasn't a damn thing done. I work at night, so Tuesday night I hopped in my truck to go to work, and what do you know, my check engine light went off! I was hoping it would stay on for the dealer, now they cant read the code. So anyways, I took it to the dealer Wed. morning and told them my situation again. They all remebered me from the other day. A couple of the Techs. were being optimistic that it probable was just the sensors.
Now keep in mind, my truck has not stalled on me sinse Friday Afternoon. Also, I have a bad engine rattle at start-up, but not all the time. As I mentioned before, these problems occur more when the truck has been running for awhile, especially when it is hot oustide. But, in the last few days, my truck has been starting great, no rattle at all. Now, the temp outside has not been as hot and humid, so that may make a difference.
So I left my truck with the dealership thinking I wouldn't have any bad news. When they called me later that day, they pretty much told me that their was nothing they could do. He said he drove the truck around town and stopped and restarted a few times. He said it acted fine??? He also told me without the check engine light, he couldn't read the code.. Now what in the hell did I just tell you the other day??? The other Stealership plainly wrote what the code said and what it meant. He then told me that if I can live with the "every once in awhile" rattle , then I shouldn't worry about it. But he then let me know that one day it will need fixin?? And said that I probably am looking at a bill about $2000 He said it was about a 13 hour job, and very costly. By this point I was bout ready to go off. I calmly asked him about the sensors, his relpy........."well we still got to pull everything off the front end, your still looking at a lot of money"
So there you have it, just when I thought I was getting this matter resolved, the punkazz service dude gives me a low blow below the belt. I honestly believe he did not want to even attempt the job. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought these camshaft position sensors were fairly easy to get to?? But according to him, it was right in the guts of the timing housing..
I'm at the point where I'm really starting to not enjoy my truck at all. Also, I thought I could trust these goons at my dealership.......I guess i'll just keep driving it the way it is, untill something gives. Right now the truck is running just fine, but having to wonder how long its gonna stay that way really worries me.
One more thing, when I dropped my truck off, one of the service techs was looking at my estimate that the other stealership wrote up. The guy starts laughing and shaking his head. He told me that they don't replace stuff that aint broke. Maybe because they don't want to fix things that are broke..........punks!!

as far as the check engine light going off and not being able to read the code i dont think thats right.my mechanic had told me when i had my old dakota that if the light goes off on its own it will still store the code for a period of time
Rattle? elaborate on that... first ive read of a rattle.
go to an independent, tell him up front treat you right and word of mouth will help him.
CMP- its easy as it gets for a 97-03 f150. im not sure about the 04 someone said you had to clock it and i just cant see that one.

the saga goes on, I just got thru reaming out the CSM center at ford and they basically told me in not so many words that i am at their mercy. Now mind you that the truck is STILL IN THE SHOP and has been since 24-july waiting on a cam. The noise4 was a "hammering" and we found out the first three lobes on the right cam had divots in it where the roller rockers chewed em. Also the first two roller rockers for the first cylnder on the right side were seized up-COMPLETELY and started to chew up the rocker arm housing. Ford has acknowledged the problem, has NOT offered to make a payment on my rig, nor offer any sort of compensation for my problems. I asked about an after market comp cam and was told that if i put it in that i was going to void the warranty, and the manufacturers cam was SUPERIOR to any after market cam.
I called Comp Cams and talked to Jeremy in the ordering/CS dept. and he told em that this is a very big problem, and that ford is trying to develop a cam and rickers that are not goign to do this in the future......meanwhile here i sit with a P.O.S. Mercury Milan for a loaner. I missed out on all of the livestock shows, had to borrow the old man's ton dually and a friends Tahoe ( i know it is a chevy, but it was free) to pull a trailer to get things.

Excuse me, but I'm a little confused. You stated you have a 2004 F150 5.4L 3V with an intermittant P0345 code. Truck has been to 2 stealerships already. Has no one even bothered to check the alternator as per TSB 06-19-12?????????
