I'm looking at purchasing an 01-04 F250 or F350 5.4l after my lease is up in November but am wondering about the fuel economy. Does anyone have any real life numbers of what their getting with the 5.4l? Also how does the 5.4l do for towing? I'm trying to weigh out if i should pay less for the gas and get worse mileage, or pay more for the diesel (7.3l only) and get better economy and towing.

 

Crappy mileage and not so great towing. Guy at work gets 13 MPG in his SCab short bed F-250 on the highway unloaded. I get 18 in my 7.3 doing mostly highway.

 

i get about 15mpg highway with my 5.4 reg cab 4x4. if your doing alot of towing get the diesel..dont bother with 5.4. i plow winters and 5.4 does ok but... my buddy has a 96 350 with a 7.3 and it tows his camper,four wheeler, jet skis etc.. no problems at all and thats thru the new hampshire mountains.

 

my '99 supercab shortbox gets 10mpg no matter how I drive it.

 

Get the 6.8 or the 7.3.. My brother's old 2000 F350 reg. cab with the V10 got 11 mpg city and about 15 highway.. and was a BEAST.
7.3 will get great mileage and has potential for huge power too.

 

For towing the V10 will do the same described above (especially if it has 4:10's +) if you are wanting to stick with a gasser.

 

Thanks for the feedback guys, i'm thinking i'll go with a diesel if i can find a lower lieage 7.3l. I guess it all depends on what kind of deals i can find too.

 

if you find a 7.3 with under 100k they are gonna want top dollar. only reason i got my 5.4 was because it was a bank repo and the price was to good to turn down...otherwise... id be going for the 7.3

 

My dad's 2004 F250 Crew Cab FX4 gets about 12 if you baby it, 8 to 10 when towing a bumper hitch cattle trailer.
