I find that I will turn OD off even when I'm not towing anything... Driving in the mountains with long grades running empty there are times it still needs to be in 3rd.. Sometimes, the computer just does not know how to handle varying driving conditions and needs some actual human input..
My wife drives me crazy when she is driving the truck on long road trips in the mountains... She would let it shift in and out of OD going up a long grade, all the while giving it gas and letting off... UGGHHH... I will press the button when it first downshifts and keep it off until we reach the top and then turn it back on when we reach the top. I now just have to tell her when to turn it off and turn it on in those situations...
Same thing applies when towing... I also manually pull the gear shift into 2nd when the hills require it as well...
Good luck!
