Question REAR AXLE: Did You Get 3.73 or 3.55 In Your HD?

All of the various write-ups and promotional material that I've seen from Ford list the Harley-Davidson F-150 with the 3.73 Limited Slip rear end. (I have a couple of wall posters as well as a Ford dealer spec. sheet which all list it as a 3.73LS.)

My build date is 07/26/00 and it came with the 3.55LS. When did Ford make the change? Secondly, wonder why they made the change -- was it for fuel economy? I would have preferred the hotter rear end if a choice were given.

What did the rest of the HD Edition owners get? Is my vehicle the exception?

Mine has the 3.55 also. And I agree with you, I would rather have the 3.73. I wonder what Ford has to say about this?

Mine also has the 3.55 rear. The brochure states Ford Division reserves the right to change product specifications at any time without incurring obligations. So Ford is off the hook by changing the rear.

Red face

Well, the mystery deepens. I had really expected more 3.73 responses. Be interesting to see if anyone at all got the 3.73 rear end, or if they decided to just go with the 3.55 from day one. I hope all the Harley truck owners let us know.

We would certainly have a bit more off-the-line punch with the 3.73!

Question

Hi Robert!

Am curious as to when your truck was built or when you might have purchased it? Are you sure that all (or most) of the trucks sold in Mexico have the 3.73?

My guess is that the very early HD trucks off the line had the 3.73 rear end, and then Ford switched to the 3.55 for some reason.

Mine has a 3.55; window sticker lists it as such with build of 7/24/00--tonneau wasn't listed either. Supect it has more to do with better gas mileage numbers--mine lists 18 city/25 highway miles per IMPERIAL gallon (Canadian eh!) More like 21 on a good day and a light foot. Also wonder if our transmission can handle the 3.73 very well; believe most F150 auto only avail with 3.55 while you can get the 3.73 with a manual. What's the Lightning got?

all 2000 HD were built in Oakville Canada about 20 miles from Toronto. If Mexico got 3.73's and an early build date, wonder why? Supercrew versions will be USA builds.

Clonetek: any idea if the transmission changed on the 01 L to handle the 3.73? Guess the gas mileage will go down further Just curious about your 'free' clunk--in transmission? and was it there before the chip install?

casey- there is a guy who builds the transmisions for the lightnings that posts in the lightning forum... i believe he has said that the tranny's did change a little bit for '01.

if the gas milage goes down any further on the the lightnings, you'll have to have a tanker truck follow you around.
(i get 10-11 mpg around town, and i drive it every day)

the "clunk" is a defective upper control arm in the '99-'00 lightnings.. ford hasnt come up with a good fix for it yet.
