chirping sound at idle........Help!!

My truck is making a chirping sound upon startup, and it gets louder/quicker as you step on the gas. Does it sound like a fan/clutch/power steering/pulley problem, or is this the cam phaser noise?

thanks,
Bubba

Could be you serpentine belt or idler pulley.

Is there more than one idler pulley? I'm assuming it's the big black one on the top. Jbrew, you got a schematic?

Jbrew,

do you agree with the diagnosis' above? Do you think the noise is coming from the idler pulleys?

I don't know from your description ??? Does the sound ever go away ?

"Chirping" - Sounds like a belt. Check your ware mark indicator on the tensioner. Is it to the limit ? How the belt look ? - Look for cracking or missing pieces.

Belts okay ? If so, pull the belt off. Spin each pulley and listen for a scuffing sound or resistance of any kind. Even a clicking sound is a sign of a bad bearing. Check for pulley wobble. Any wobbling indicates a bad bearing. As mentioned above, idler pulleys are the most common, but I've seen tensioners freeze up - keeping them from self adjusting.

You need to do a little investigating

Chirping is caused by a bearing that is going bad.

Replacing the pully with the bad bearing will, of course, fix it.

You will need to identify which one is bad...

Jbrew,

Belt looks good. Sound does not go away. Pitch stays the same. As you press on the gas, chirp gets faster. I guess you could also describe the sound as a squeel.

Did you get your F-350 yet? I am considering trading my truck in for a 350, but concerned what the maintenance costs would be. I heard the maintenance costs on diesels are steep.

Jbrew,

I found the bad pulley. Do you know how tight I should torque the new one? Should I use blue loctite?

Thanks,
Bubba
