I have to replace a head, IIRC that the heads were re-designed because of the plug spitting issue on some of the 03 engines. Will these redesigned heads fit on an 02 4.6L? If so how do you identify the newer design?

Not sure what you mean by IIRC. I've heard the term, but it's not a head specific term AFAIK ? Casting #'s - But I have no idea what they are. Only other way is counting the SP chamber threads. I believe these heads are on the 03 - 07 4.6L's. Also the 03 5.4L.

 

Sorry:o IIRC was short for If I Recall Correctly, I just remember seeing on here before that some of the 2003 heads had changed and had more threads in the plug holes than the ones on my 2002.

 

Are you replacing the head due to a blown plug hole or is it cracked? It would be far cheaper to have full length hard anodized plug threads locked into the heads than replacing one. I had both heads done for $200.

Oh that's right , I haven't seen that in awhile. I'm pretty sure all 03's were changed but can't verify. It might have been a mid year mod. They tend to do that sometimes, to use up what they have on hand first.
