Air Filter Change .. how often

Hey all...just curious about your opinions on Air Filter changes on a 5.4. How often do you change? I know what is recommended but curious if you all stick pretty close to that OR ..... ???? Thanks for your info

If it is a paper filter, basically when you can't see light through it anymore. It will probably be a good brown color by that time.

However often it needs it. I inspect mine every oil change and toss it whenever I need to, usually about twice a year.

You shouldn't try and suck mud into it either though!

Amsoil EaA filters are rated at 4 yrs / 100,000 miles which ever comes first...yes, that's with cleaning when they get dirty on the exterior.

I have an 07 with 9,000 miles on it. No off roading at all and all of my miles have come from trips along the east coast. Should I change my air filter?

Not likely... It's as simple as checking it to be sure. IIRC, most of the manuals are going to a 30,000 mile interval now. I read an SAE study not too long ago about a lifetime filter being developed on the Focus by some engineers at ACH (formerly Visteon). It was pretty remarkable, and they tested in some severe conditions... It was still 'ok' after 250,000 miles of dusty conditions beyond what any vehicle would see in normal use.

FWIW, I haven't changed my K&N since I installed it 50,000 miles ago. I've recharged the one in my Explorer once in the last 100,000 miles.
