My dad has a 2005 F150 with the 5.4 engine. Recently it has been really hard to start. Turn key truck cranks and cranks and nothing, turn key cranks and fires. Been doing this for a few weeks and only on a cold start. Then today when he started his truck and was on his way home he noticed a check engine light. I took my Edge over to read the codes and comes back with a P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire and a P0316 Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions). It was dark when I checked the codes so I didnt pull the COP to see if I saw anything. Also im not sure which side is Cylinder 1. Passenger or Driver? Im going to pull the COP this weekend and test with a multimeter. The truck just turned 48,000 miles. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I searched on here for the p0316 and really didnt see much.

 

Passenger, a multimeter is not the best test, it would require a stress test to be accurate. The 316 means cyl. has a dead miss, it is all the time. Common with COP failures.

 

No, the P0316 means a misfire was detected on start up, just as the code said.

2005 5.4 3V, hard to start, misfire codes, it's probably got a/an stuck injector(s). There's an extended coverage recall for this concern.

 

What could cause a COP to fail so soon? The truck only has 48,000 miles. So it could be a stuck injector on Cylinder 1?

 

Coils can fail whenever they want to, they're electric devices. I've seen them go bad at less than 15K miles or so; conversely, my dad's '97 F250 with 190K-something miles has three or four original coils on it. It's hard to say.

I'd be inclined to think that #1 injector is faulty.

 

Thanks! You are the man when it comes to engine's. I will tell him to make an appointment with the dealer to get it looked at. Would the stuck injector possibly cause the cop to fail, or could the cop be good and the injector is the only thing causing the misfire?

 

Naw, just the injector. The 5.4 3V coils, I haven't seen very many if any fail since the engine came out.

 

Thats what a dead miss would cause. If the cylinder is dead completely whether it be a COP failure or a Injector failure, it would miss all the time because it has no fuel/spark. But hey you could swap the coils from 1 and 5 and then see how it runs. If the misfire moves, then the COP is the likely fault. (it will save the fee for Diagnosis at the dealer)

 

I just talked to him a little but ago and he said that the code hasnt come back up yet and the truck started alot better this morning. Strange. The hard start has been going on for about a month. Then the codes showed up yesterday. He is going to call me this afternoon and let me know if the codes come up on is drive home from work. 45 minutes both ways so should be ample time to come back. I thought about switching the COP with another one and seeing if the misfire changes plugs this weekend.

 

It is a good, quick and easy way to find out if the coil is failing.
