I noticed that most people ordered the 5.4 engine, instead of the 4.6, I wonder why, I test drove the 4.6 and thought it had plenty of power. Given, all the listed engine problems with the 5.4, would the 4.6 be a better option not to mention the mileage.

Never professed to being the brightest person around, just tend to get wrapped up in the thrill of things.

 

The 5.4 is much stronger,I have 4.6 in my current truck and my wife's expy has the 5.4,big differance.I guess its the torque.I like the 4.6 and it does a great job,but the 5.4 feels alot stronger.I orderd my s-crew with the 5.4,I didn't need it,but like that engine.Delivery date on new s-crew mid april.

Go for the 5.4l!!!! Why settle for anything less. Know a guy who went for the 4.6l and says he made a big mistake, just doesn't have the torque. Just my two cents.

I wondered the same thing about which engine to pick until I talked to a few people. Several people who had the 4.6 with 4x4 told me they wished they had went with the 5.4. Also, my dealer told me few people order the 4.6 with 4x4 and the gas mileage between the two engines is not that big of a difference.

We wanted 4 wheel drive so we went with the 5.4 to help offset the weight difference. Also we are a family of 6 so even with an empty bed we are always loaded. Did not ever want to have the feeling that our new truck was underpowered even when fully loaded. We knew that these trucks love to drink gas but it was never a consideration. GOTTA HAVE THE POWER!!!

 

Okay, so 5.4L is the preference. When I test drove the 4.6L it was not loaded, and the truck has the potential to carry a lot of weight. Therefore, more power would be the preference.

Gas prices will go down again, George Bush senior is calling in his Gulf War markers. By influencing his OPEC friends to cut production so he can stifle, and discredit "Clintons" economy, and get his son George W. elected. To George senior raising energy prices is the equivalent to raising taxes, no big deal for a politician. Clinton know this conceived energy crisis will hurt is "legacy", the only legacy he deserves in my opinion is a legacy of shame. Think about those payback election politics next time you fill up your new truck. I am off my soap box.

 

Torque is the key for trucks. 350 vs 290. For a measly $680 you get +60 lb. ft. (Or $11.33 per lb.ft.) Mileage? Maybe you lose 1 mpg with the 5.4L. You gotta go with the 5.4L! I pull a car trailer 10-15 times a year, so there's no choice. I wish they would put the V10 in the F150!

I had the 4.6L, it was a perfectly good engine, didn't know what I was missing. Moved up to an F250LD with the 5.4L big difference!

Gas mileage really didn't change much either. I guess when you're not getting the best mileage in the first place it's no big deal to lose 1 or 2 mpg.

5.4 is definitely a plus on the 4x4's. Dealer also said "what's one more mile per gallon????" Except when you live in Sunny Southern California.

Just went thru my first tank of fuel. 322 miles on the first 'break in' tank. From empty to full at the gas pump(22.3 gallons)- it ONLY cost me $40.00 bucks! And thats a world of difference from last weeks prices. Today was $1.79 for 87 octane and it is going down finally. I figure that jumping on the accelerator at the stop lights wasnt a good gas saver, but it sure beats my trade-in (98 ranger,3.0L) for certain! The acceleration is awesome.

Just hit the 1000 mile mark on my new supercrew 5.4L. If any of you californian's or tourists out there were wondering, The Cajon Pass (6-7% grade) in Southern California was a breeze to shoot up! (Without a trailer of course)

Made it from San Diego to Bakersfield up hills, through the passes, and (made some passes in the other lane!) with no probs at all. Three other people made the trip with me. When i figure out my mileage I will post it. I have to finish this tank of gas of course! :-)

The mileage in 4X2 maybe even better. I have been driving a 1990 2.9 V-6 Ranger that I maintained well, and I get 22-23 MPG driving about 65 to 70 MPH. So 14-15 MPG, is about as low as I want to go. As the saying goes, if you wanna play, you gotta pay. Or, glory and suffering our inseparable. If I want the glory of owning a Supercrew, I better learn to suffer the payments, and the fuel expense.

 

Here is the mileage for the first 7 tanks of gas in my 4x4, 5.4 l V8. This represents a large mixture of both Highway and city driving.

13.9, 15.9, 15.1, 15.8, 12.8, 15.0, 14.2
average = 14.7

Here is the mileage on several of the last tanks of gas on my '97, 4x2, 4.6 l V8 with about the same mix of driving (truck had 32,000 miles on it)

13.5, 15.6, 16.3, 16.5, 17.0, 12.7, 17.6, 15.9, 16.4
average = 15.7

I definitely feel the extra housepower is worth the hit in mileage.
