I brought my 05 KR Diesel to the shop on Friday. The service advisor told me that it should only take 3 to 5 revolutions before the diesel fires. Mine cranks for 8 to 12 revolutions before it fires. It has 85,000 miles. The dealership does not know why. They have another truck same year and mileage with the same issue but they say is worse than mine. They have a call into Ford to help figure out the issue. This other truck they replaced the HP pump, and no difference. The pressure sensor checks out good on both trucks. Any ideas? I have only had the truck for 3 months and it has always cranked a while before it fired.

 

First rule is don't believe the dealership. 90% of the so called diesel techs at dealerships are nothing more than mouth-breathers. They're barely able to work on an Escort let alone a complex diesel engine.


It may be cranking slightly longer than normal, but having a PSD fire in 3-5 rev is rare. About the only engine I've seen that consistantly do that is the 12 and 24V cummins. My 7.3L is consistantly 6-8 revs if not longer if its cold out. The 6.0L also seems to want to crank longer than the 7.3L anyways. Out of 4 6.0L trucks at work (2 are 07s that I personally drove off the lot) crank almost as long as your truck. I normally count start time in seconds instead of revs, but as long as its starting in 2-3 sec you're in the norm.



I'm really suprised that Ford corporate is going along with the dealers claim of "long start times".

 

I have talked to several people and they did say that the 6.0 takes longer to start than the 7.3. I had nothing to gage it on since this is my first diesel. I was just worried about more wear and tear on the starter. Besides it was the dealership that was telling me it was taking to long. It is covered under warranty. Maybe the dealership is barking up the wrong tree for mine, but they say the other guys truck is 10x worse than mine.

 

Well here is what the dealer found;
"ICP slow to rise cranking pinpoint test base oil system and replace pump and regulator".

 

try cycling the glow plugs more than once, say two or three times. the long cranking all depends on how cold the engine is, but more cycles of the glow plug should help.

 

I tried cycling the glow plugs more before trying to start but it did not help. It would still crank for a long time.

 

Is it slow with the long cycles?

If so, could be as simple as a battery.

Mine was slow starting, bat was the issue.

 

The cranking speed was fine. It was the long cranking cycles.

 

Worth a short...good luck, tell us what you find out.
