Hey Guys,

I was just wondering what kind of gas mileage do you guys get with your 5.4L engine Expeditions? I am experiencing about 10-11 MPG (280 miles from my 26 gallon tank).

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm getting aprox 17 hwy and 12 city. I hope with what your getting, especially with the way gas prices are going, you do all city drive or towing.

 

Well I would say 80% city and the rest highway... no towing. I'm only 17 so it's not fun paying $200-$250 a month in gas for a guy my age.

14-15 around town and 18+ hwy. I used to get 12-13 at best around town but with the same driving habits get the 14-15 or if I drive like most Expeditions do, I can get 16 or so.

Last weekend, climate control on and into a hard 20-30 MPH head wind I got about 16.5.

The differences and the ability to get better came after Superchip, FIPK and exhaust. Not typical results though.

I noticed you have 20 inch rims, so I suppose there is an impact there. I get 13/18 with my 4x4-3:55 gears. I put a K&N air filter in and also use synthetic oil, which adds about .5 mpg on the road. Another thing, as simple as it sounds, I keep the tires on max inflation (door panel). Everytime I take it in and get the tires rotated, they lower the pressure-don't know why. Just as a thought, I would think the payments are worse than the gas ticket.

 

12-13 around town. I can do better if I drive like an old lady(no offense to old ladies out there)but no fun.
I'm assuming you have 3:55 in the rear. Which should give you a better MPG. Also try some texeco gas, it cost more but I notice better MPG.

 

I'm looking at around 14-15mpg doing half-city and half-highway driving; for a total of 375 miles\tank. If you can swing the expense, I would recommend a Superchip for your Expy. Those of us running them have seen a gas mileage improvement. Couple that with the Gibson exhaust and Airaid intake, results in the improved mileage.

If you go that route, be sure to include your tire size along with your engine code. Prior to shipment, they will need to modify the chip to compensate for the wheels. Be sure to read the Computer Chip forum for all the details...

With my 99 I'm doin 15 in town. Haven't "chipped" it yet, but that's next. Somehow I find the heavier my shoes are, the faster I get to the next light and the poorer the mileage is. Jamoson, be careful on max inflation, tires heat up and add 3-5 psi of pressure. I've seen the aftermath of overcorrecting a SUV from a tire explosion due to overinflation.

On the average, how many miles do you get on a full tank doing regular driving?

I thought my exhaust + K&N filter would help... but they aren't.

Chip, filter, shift kit, Mobil 1 synthetic oil... 11 city/16-17 hwy. It's my wife's vehicle and she typically drives very short distances around town. Terrible for gas mileage.

Ours is a 2wd w/ 3.55s and TT package.

Doesn't chipping actually raise the cost of gas milage since you have to use 93 oct?

I agree with you on the chip. Everyone claims large enough gains in gas mileage to offset the cost of having to use higher octane fuel...well, honestly I haven't seen it.

FWIW, I have a Superchip and I have been able to use 89 octane (mid-grade here in north TX) without any pinging whatsoever.

The chip is a great mod, but don't look for it to improve gas mileage enough to make it worthwhile if that's what you're after.

98 Expy, EB, 5.4, 2WD, 3.73LS, Superchip, Magnaflow cat-back, Velocity Tube intake, K&N:

Mostly around town (wife 95%) 12-13 mpg
One long road trip best- 16.5 mpg

I agree that the Superchip has not given us any mpg improvement. I have been running 89 last 2 months due to gas prices. Mileage is the same with 93 or 89.

 

I'm getting between 12-14 in both of my beasts! (see signature)

I have a 2001 X-EB with the 5.4L.
I have had it for 3 weeks now, have 700 miles on it and have yet to get more than 10.4 MPG.

I have been told that it will take about 3000 miles before I start to get decent mileage out of it.

It may eat more gas than the Maxima that it replaced, but I look at it like this, the gas cost difference is much less than the repair bills on the Maxima Tranny....
