Exclamation V6 owners read this concerning premature head gasket failures!

I stumbled upon this today, here's the link http://www.auto.com/industry/gasket26_20000226.htm

Ford will extend engine warranties

Premature head gasket failures prompt action
February 26, 2000

BY JUSTIN HYDE
ASSOCIATED PRESS

Ford Motor Co. said Friday it would extend engine warranties on 717,680 vehicles after complaints that a defective engine part was creating huge repair bills.

Ford lengthened the warranty on head gasket failure in its 3.8-liter V6 engines to seven years and 100,000 miles on engines in 1994 Lincoln Continentals, 1994-95 Ford Tauruses and Mercury Sables, and 1995 Ford Windstar minivans.

The warranty already had been extended once in 1998 from the original length of three years and 36,000 miles to five years and 60,000 miles on the same Taurus, Sable and Windstar models and to six years or 75,000 miles on the Continental.

The head gasket is a seal that directs coolant between the engine's block and head. If it fails, the engine can lose coolant and oil and can become so severely damaged it has to be replaced.

Owners of the vehicles whose head gaskets failed during the new warranty period will be eligible for a refund of their repair bills or a $4,000 coupon toward the purchase of a new Ford, Mercury or Lincoln. Owners will be notified by mail in March.

The Center for Auto Safety said the average reported mileage when the gaskets failed was 65,750, while the head gaskets should last 120,000 miles.

Thumbs up

Once again, FORD seems to be standing behind their vehicles. It bites that there is a problem in the first place..but this is a positive action by FORD.

Anyone owning a 1997 F 150 with a v6 4.2L engine should be aware of this recall.Coolant leak, internal or external.Ford is replacing the front timming cover gaskets (8 hour job).Coolant is leaking into the engine.I just bought a 1997 F150 XL 4.2L from a Ford dealer a month ago.I found coolant in the oil and they just put in a brand factory new engine no questions asked.Seems like they have some serious problems with this engine.
