1-2 Shift Error - Overdrive light blinking... $2,700

Since I've had the truck, the shift from 1 to 2 had a brief delay. I asked some people about this, and the general concensus was "well, wait til it gets worse".

1 week ago, my OD light started flashing. When I am slowing down from 55 to 0, at around 15-5 mph, it will shift hard (downshifting here). But, when I start up the truck, and before the OD light starts to flash, the downshifting is fine. Only when the OD light flashes is the downshifting rough.

FORD place said "Well your tranny fluid is contaminated... let's try to replace that first and see if that helps - $150ish" and "Otherwise we'll be looking at an assembly - $1700 parts, 800 labor, plus diagnostic fees and tax = $2700" whatever that (assembly) means.

A highly recommended transmission company that has little overhead, said that it would be a MAX of $1600 there, with a complete transmission rebuild if necessary.

ANY ideas??

99 4x4 5.4

Check the price of a new tranny from dealer with a tranny shop installing it. I had a rebuilt tranny and it took a few times a the shop for them to get it right. Dont really know if it was right or not cause I traded the truck due to getting tired of the problems.

Keith, seems like the 1-2 accumulator spring might be ****. I just had my tranny overhauled, (o/d quit), 2000 4x4 5.4 4r70w and he replaced all kinds of stuff. Springs, accumulators, o/d assembly, o/d pin, band, forward clutches, hell, even the torque converter. All kinds of things were upgraded and it was 1700 out the door, r&r of the tranny and everything. Of course, this is a friend of the family, but he can't do it for free either. Bare in mind something is screwey in the tranny and save about 2 grand for the worst case scenario. If it's only starting this, keep monitoring it. You shouldn't wait too long to check it or have it checked again. The 1600 dollar tranny shop is about right on, have them give it a good going over, guaranteed more problems are there so a rebuild may be a good idea.

it's just silly.

It runs PERFECT, until the light starts blinking. When the light starts blinking, it shifts hard when slowing down. (between 1-2 I think)

yeah but that wouldn't cause the OD light to start blinking would it? My truck I'm pretty sure had a shot 1-2 accumulator spring, but it drove fine (other than the hard upshift) with no flashing lights/codes

You need to hook up with a Scantool type monitor, something that will monitor evrything the tranny is doing. Pressure this and that's, fluid temps, electrical faults. Pros will usually have these as they are 2 grand give or take for these portable scanners.

If it comes to them wanting to replace it, let me know- I have a new Jasper 4r70w im not using that I would give you for $1000 + shipping. I bought it for my 2000 4x4 f150 but never used it (long story...). anyway, it would save you some serious cash.

My truck did the same thing the light would flash and downshift really hard and it was the tourqe convertor you can reset it by dissconecting your positive battery cable and groumding it and that resets the computer ford told me to do that and it worked fine for about a month and started flashing again then they said I should just replace the tourque convertor so I did problem solved never happened again
